Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a terrorist planning to stage a sectarian attack by targeting a mosque in Gilgit.
“Junaid Khan was on his way to an Imambargah to attack it with a Russian hand-grenade when he was intercepted by agencies and taken to an investigation centre,” said Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Mohammad Ali Zia while briefing the media in his office.
“Thank God, the plan has failed and it is a big achievement as far as secret agencies and police are concerned,” remarked Zia.
He said the terrorist was a teenager from Gilgit’s Sonikote area. According to the information, he was studying in a madrassa in Islamabad last year when someone named Suleman, from Peshawar, took him to a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi camp in Miramshah for training.
The teenager had purchased the hand-grenade for Rs4,000 a month ago in Gilgit and had it buried for use at an appropriate time, according to the SSP.
