A winless season for McLaren so far has prompted managing director Jonathan Neale to call on his team to identify and then rectify the mistakes it made this year to turn its fortunes around, according to ESPNF1.

Attempting to increase the level of performance, McLaren had made a radical departure from its race-winning 2012 car over the winter, but the plan backfired and it has not finished higher than fifth in the first eight races of 2013.

“Formula One is one of those sports where you are punished if you are off the pace,” said Neale. “We’ve managed to achieve some things in terms of reliability, operational consistency and stuff. But the on-track delivery is just not competitive at the moment and that’s very painful.”
