Egypt has become a significant case in point where the US has found itself on the wrong side every time. Support to former despot Hosni Mubarak failed to work in the face of the people’s revolution, and when it became apparent that the boat could not be saved from sinking, the US dropped its former ally and came out — or so it claimed — on the side of ‘democracy’. Even as it embraced the revolutionary chaos of Tahrir Square, US wheels started spinning for a ‘solution’ that would continue to work in favour of Washington. US sights settled on the Muslim Brotherhood and the world’s big ‘democracy’ went on to support the conservative organisation and its President Mohamed Morsi.
The Brotherhood found a passionate supporter in the US ambassador to Egypt, Anne Patterson, who was popularly described by the liberals in Egypt as the Muslim Brotherhood’s “sleeper cell”. On June 18, ignoring the anti-Morsi protests, she said, “because many in the Egyptian government are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood or its Freedom and Justice Party, the US government must work with them. Some say that street action will produce better results than elections. To be honest, my government and I are deeply sceptical.” That was then. Today, confronted with the overthrow of Morsi, the US has, in another U-turn, gone on to support the protestors and ‘democracy’, with its now captive Al Jazeera running a strange story of how the Americans were supporting the people all along. Ironical, considering that some of the most anti-Morsi newspapers in Egypt carried stories placing the US on the side of the Brotherhood.
The downside of the upsurge, at the moment, is the increasingly important role acquired by the Egyptian military. This will have to be watched closely, particularly as the US has been fairly supportive of it through the years. However, events suggest that the Egyptian military is working in tandem with the popular will at the moment, as mass movements of the kind witnessed in Egypt cannot be controlled, much less manipulated. Mohammad ElBaradei has been brought in as the interim vice-president, a secular and liberal face of the struggle. The protestors, who clearly have a will of their own, are allowing the army to restore peace and political equilibrium but it will remain to be seen whether they will remain in the driving seat in the future, or will be replaced by the men in uniform and their international backers.
It is ironic that the US, which justifies the worst kind of military action across the world in the name of democracy, is now seen on the side of the fundamentalist and extremist groups in West Asia. Starting with the Zionists, who have the full backing of the US, it is the extremist religious-militant organisations that have gained ground in the region, ever since the invasion of Iraq. Al Qaeda, far from being dismantled, is active in Iraq, Libya and Syria, where the Obama Administration has been supporting bands of criminals, Salafis, extremists and terrorists to effect a ‘regime change’. The US would have succeeded in its plan of toppling the Assad government and replacing it with the conglomerate of forces working with it had it not been for the tough position taken by Russia. As it is, the heavy weapons that are being pushed into Syria at the instance of the US, will eventually be used by al Qaeda. So much for US-sponsored democracy!
Saudi Arabia is now the only voluntary ally of the US in West Asia. It is interesting to note that Washington sees nothing wrong with this country that is exporting conservative Wahabi-ism to the world. The US has dismembered Iraq, controlled Saudi Arabia but the other countries in the region are in ferment as the people fight the war for democracy against their compromised governments and their western backers. And as the people of Egypt have shown twice over, the Americans are no longer in command.

@Unbelievable: " USA provides financial aid to Egypt under both Morsi and Mubarak. " Not only that, but US is extra, extra careful not to call Morsi's ouster as one by a military coup, so that, under US law, it is not forced to discontinue aid to Egypt. But, America haters, like this author, will continue to wallow in their pathological hate.
@ Iftekhar Hussain.
While disagreeing with the viewpoint of a writer, one must not point accusing finger on his mentor. The scribe had the opportunity in late 2000 to spend a few hours with M J Akbar during his official visit to Peshawar. During discussion on a number of issues, I found him very objective. Instead of drawing the right conclusion from the constant turmoil in Egypt and civil war on sectarian basis in Syria we prefer head bashing of those moderate and liberal Muslim journalists who are worried about the future of Muslim countries of the Middle East.
Why does Egypt or Syria have anything to do with America let alone America's "naked ambition" - seems to me that most of the criticism leveled again America these days are it's passive attitude towards the Middle East - one of those "lead from behind" things. . The USA doesn't hold itself as controlling any country - certainly not Egypt where it's relations aren't much different than the India/USA relations. Egypt is an independent country - USA didn't intervene when the people rose up and kicked out Mubarak - didn't intervene when the people rose up and kicked out Morsi. USA provides financial aid to Egypt under both Morsi and Mubarak. Many people also ignore that the Muslim Brotherhood Morsi reacted to the Israel/Gaza conflict in the exact same manner as Mubarak would have - clear evidence that Morsi and the USA got along just fine. . Author should be ashamed at congratulating Russia for opposing the USA sponsored UN resolutions on Syria. That opposition has indirectly resulted in over a hundred thousand innocent Syrians losing their lives. In hindsight even Russia and China now know their opposition was an error - it's obvious that Assad's response to his peoples protest has been criminal and that Assad's days are numbered.
Just more anti American bashing and unfounded conspiracy theories...this diatribe only sells in Pakistan where they are in so much denial about how badly they have operated their own country they have to blame outsiders for all their problems...look at this fact, after conquering Iraq from a brutal dictator they walked away and left the country to the Iraqis!...and after conquering Afganistan from al Qaeda they will again walk away and leave it to the Afganistan!...if America was really interested in taking over the world why do they leave the countries they have conquered?...
Although this is your view, I believe you have shown courage to call a spade a spade. Your pointing out the elephant in the room ' Americas relationship with the KSA ' was needed because if there is one pure example of double standards, that is it.
An Anti American Indian Muslim finding fault of Americans in the Arab world. Have you ever thought the consider the problems of Arabs are their own making? And why should Americans care for Egyptians, the US government is there to protect Americans, not Egyptians, neither it is a world government that it has to think about the world. They, nevertheless pay for a bulk of world peace, asking for more is just being ungrateful, but then what will you know about being grateful. Its about time Arabs take responsibility of their own mistakes and follies. Its no more an Indian or American fault they they are a complete mess. Curiously only the countries without Arab oil are the problem child, the ones with oil seem to bribe its population well to buy peace. Perhaps Morsy could have looked for some oil in his backyard, for that too I am sure he had to hire Americans, because hardly any Arab know anything about finding oil, and if they haven't found anything, he would have promptly blamed it on American conspiracy.
@Author, YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON I HAVE SEEN WHO HAS WRITTEN THAT AMERICA IS TRYING TO CONQUER THE WORLD. GOOD LUCK TO YOUR CAREER
@All the Indian posters:
Why are you obsessed about what's going on in Muslim countries?
This guy is a professional journalist unlike the rest of you, he can write about whoever he wants, or whatever he wants, it doesn't always have to be about Pakistan, but you guys don't understand that,so you try to sidetrack the main subject of the article, if you want to bash Pakistan, there are many articles to do that
Or maybe Americans have become wiser. They do not want to decide who comes to power but have a policy to work with whoever is in power. Americans were not a big fan of Muslim brotherhood but decided to work with them because they were in power, Now they are out of power they will figure out a way to work with the new set of rulers. It is not surprising people are going to find fault with USA independent of what it does, because that is their full time hobby.
The Snowdon affair has once again exposed USA to be a fraud. The USA while purporting to protect its citizens snoops on everyone else. The USA claims to value freedom above all yet actively violates its citizens freedoms and then tries to cover up its footprints. The USA also does not seem to care about its words or consequences of its actions. It is an evil country concerned with only itself and not others. It is not a good citizen of the world.
Oh those Americans! Friends to get arms and aid from but all season enemies. Muslims shoud just reject them.
US has always been ambiguous in terms of its foreign policy. As the biggest proponent of democracy, It mostly tied with Dictators or Authoritarian in the Middle East, Africa and Asia particularly Pakistan. So, it's not the new phenomena which you pointed out.
The Americans are finding that it is not easy to conquer the world.
news to me...
Very well written, should be eye opener for those who propagate the conspiracy that Iran is backdoor ally of US.
thanks God i m not tax payer to USA because once again Taliban And Al Qaeda will be declared hero and 100 years advanced American Nation will appreciate that effort
Those villainous Americans, always up to no good. Why do they have to interfere in the affairs of pious Muslims who only have peace in their hearts?
Seema Mustafa, I know the exact year when you started under the patronage of M.J.Akbar. It was early 70's when your writing started to appear in the Telegraph Calcutta when M.J Akbar was the editor. The problem with most of the Indian Muslim writers is just one, they cannot write the total truth about any Muslim country, when it is doing good, especially Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan, otherwise the government will sit up and take notice. Too bad. And so far as America is concerned, well it loves to be rebuked. One more thing, do a little more research about Al Qaeda. Which Al Qaeda, the western or the eastern?
OK, the Americans are no longer in command - so why does that making you jump up and down in glee?
