Child labour on the rise

GUJRANWALA:

As many as 54 primary, middle and high schools in Gujranwala district are at least a kilometre and a half apart, according to a report released by the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) on Wednesday.

The report said the areas where there were not enough schools included Noshera Virkan, Kamoke and Wazirabad. These areas, the report said, had lower literacy rates. It said a higher percentage of underage children were also working in these areas. NCHD GM Malik Ehsanullah said six schools in the district had enrolled students but no teachers. “The number of illiterate women is disturbing.”
