Many compare Pakistan’s present sorry state with the plight of this patient. One minute Osama bin Laden is caught, the next terrorists are blowing themselves in order to kill as many of us as possible. Then, there are reports of drone attacks, targeted attacks on foreigners, an economy in blues, the Abbottabad Commission Report leak and the BBC report on the MQM and its chief. Pakistan’s integrity then is like a military academy. Parts of it keep passing out. Does it have any future then?
When the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report was published by an Indian newspaper without being officially declassified in Pakistan, there was a lot of hue and cry. Every state has some secrets and the right to keep them, or so it is believed. But that was then. Now, when the Abbottabad Commission’s pearls of wisdom are leaked to a foreign news channel, should we be worried? Perhaps, a state’s power is not in question here. It has more to do with the relationship between new technologies, a state’s inability to master them and a workforce that can revolt anytime. Those responsible for leaking the report should be found out and punished (I say it out of pure spite. Hey, they could have sold the report to a Pakistani media organisation, but no, they had to leak it to a foreign group). But those who kept the report a secret should also be questioned. The magnus opus created by the Commission hardly merits such secrecy.
The economy again seems a big reason behind our state’s gradual meltdown. When you don’t have money, you start failing in every area of governance. Fortunately, for us, the current government and the opposition have a good understanding of the situation and hence are focusing mainly on the economy. Meanwhile, Pakistan has reached an agreement with the IMF. And while everybody keeps saying that the IMF can only create more trouble and never offer solutions, this government seems confident that this time it will work.
Pakistan’s territorial integrity and unstable democracy are often identified as a few more areas of concern. While it is true that there are two insurgencies going on in the country and Balochistan’s situation is reaching a critical level, simultaneously, there is an effort to win back the parties that want separation. The process hasn’t started yet and there is huge resistance from the status quo forces within the province but even this can be resolved. Also, it must be pointed out that Balochistan is not like East Pakistan where there wasn’t any geographical contiguity. The situation is not yet beyond repair.
Should the biggest worry then be about the war on terror? We have fought this war for over a decade and without a road map. We have to worry about its outcome and the fact that even the outcome can have a long-lasting impact. The government, our deep state and the opposition need to work together to find a solution. Imran Khan’s decision to leave the country at a time when the government wanted to bring all stakeholders on one table to try to find a solution is not encouraging. But if that changes, a focus on finding solutions will help this country a lot.
As for democracy, I have no doubt that it can take care of itself. We have been worrying for no reason. So, where is the doom and gloom situation? Yes, the current situation is bad but it isn’t life threateningly bad. If we maintain course, our friend will soon come out of coma.

Today we reap what we sowed when Pakistan lost Bengal province. General Zia could have undo Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Nationalization. Center of Power is with Pakistan Bureaucracy. Pakistan Steel Mill life as steel mill is over. Pakistan Steel Mill now to be dismanteled and sold. Simple law of diminishing return is in progress. We can progress If and When we are serious about our Future or just remain in Present.
Only if Pakistan can get rid of all apologists and grow a spine.
yaar.... folk just have to squeeze some Imran-bashing in irrespective of the subject being talked about. Get over him people!
@dsc9567: "Pakistan is undoubtedly going through a multitude of crises;" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And each crisis the result of active choices made by Pakistan itself ! (from Militancy to decrepit economy to energy shortages to corruption...even floods.) In that sense Pakistan is a truly self made country.
as long as we have childish judiciary..and dominance of one province,we have no future
Author and commentators prove which clan they belong to. Some here are so senseless that they claim to belong to Hindu DNA, might one ask what were hindus before they turned to hinduism?
Pakistan is undoubtedly going through a multitude of crises; predominantly because people are being paid to hide the truth and enhance confusion such as this article, Pakistani TV media and the liberal extremists.
Pakistan with 2 or 3 futures is still better off than an Indian with about 25+ futures. Did someone tell indians and pro-indians to mind their own business?
Pakistan will start to pull out of its problems when its masters, the awam decide to take charge of giving instructions to their servants, the administration. This can be done and will soon be done
Pakistan has multiple futures ++++++++++++++++++++ At least one each for each breakaway country.
When the economy is in doom people from top to bottom would be inclined to secure and the security comes from the money/ wealth. So the goal for every one is to amass wealth irrespective of the means. Corruption is bound to creep in all aspect of life, from politicians to the ordinary labour. The difference lies in the gravity of corruption and not the willingness. it is the economy i.e. strengthening of the economy is the panacea i feel.
China is the sure cure for this patient +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Govt should open centres of Chinese Medicines.
When one takes a closer look at our political, military, religious and judicial leaders and systems, one is hard pressed to think like you.
@ahmed41:
Many countries claim themselves as different Religions as their state Religion and they are peaceful. Example: Ireland, which is Christian country. Even UK is one!
But, only when states are Islamic Republic the problems kick start. It doesn't have to be Islamic, the followers being in large numbers are good enough for the trigger of Radicalization to kick in. I've given example above.
So, answer your question, Religion by itself I don't have a problem with, only with those which produces such extreme behaviour.
@BruteForce: "---------------So I see no solution for this. Things will only get worse. Pakistan by being created on communal lines has been destined to be attached to Religion forever.---"
Does that mean , attached to religion for better or for worse ?
What about being related to religion as an aspect of personal ,inner spirituality ?
Well, you can find a solution if you admit the problem.
Pakistan is just following the trend of most Muslim countries. You call Radicalisation a problem, but youths in UK and US and non-Muslim countries are getting radicalised. In Muslim countries people voting for Islamic parties which suggests radicalisation on a massive scale.
Pakistan is just ahead of the curve from Egypt, Turkey and other countries. Few like Somalia, Afghanistan are even ahead of Pakistan.
Seeing this the problem is pretty straight forward. There is only one common thread and that cannot change, because it'll never be admitted a problem in the first place!
So I see no solution for this. Things will only get worse. Pakistan by being created on communal lines has been destined to be attached to Religion forever.
Sure it does.
possibility 1: As 2-3 seperate nations, each perhaps with their own interpretation of Islam and nation.
Possibility 2: As an integrated federation with all regions getting good say in how the nation is governed. Such a federation will need to be a moderate islamic state, because there is apparently too many interpretations of what constitutes 'islam', thus making it imperative to have an idea of Pakistan that is something other than Islam.
If you are interested in your future, you should not destroy your past.
We are that unfortunate Nation that has even destroyed its 5000 years of history. We destroyed our 5000 years-old identity and could not make a new identity in 66 years.
I wonder what we are? What can we be when we are not even Muslim?
The only people who fight for democracy tooth and nail are not the people but the politicians. To them democracy is simply millions and millions in corruption money and luxury life living like a parasite at the state's expanse.
I'm not sure if the author is trying to be encouraging and hopeful out of a need to be different from the rest or just out of pure naivety. Whatever it is, it surely seems comical.
Pakistan is comatose which is worse than dying. Comatose means were are in a permanent vegetative state. If we are dying we can imagine end and a possible new beginning.
Future is not at debate , the kind of future is at question.
The doctor attending to the patient seems to be a quack. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Neem hakim khatre jaaan.
"If we maintain course, our friend will soon come out of coma." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Well the 'course'is what has caused the coma in the first place !
Is the Kaptaan on a World Cup tour?
of course Pakistan has the best future if - the corrupt politicians, buearucats, and yellow journalism.
agree on every point you mentioned.. but our nation and their leaders doesn't really care about the challenges we are facing.. They have one slogan in common " Yahan pay sub chalta hai aur Allah Sub thek kare ga " this slogan has ruined the emotions of my countrymen.. and when you talk about the leadership, they are busy in blame games and point scoring with only mantras not with a clear cut solution, in simple . we lack policy. Top Priorities of the nation need be jot down .
How could a country have a future when many including the education system only talks about how great we have been in the past? We have to build the future and stop living in the past. We are waiting for a miracle, a strong man to come over and uplift the country. It ain't going to happen and has not happened. There are people who still hate democracy and true education. Even though most of the advanced world is democratic and educated. They did not start with perfect govt but did start the process. We do not want to start/earn the fruits but get is for free.
As long as local government, provincial autonomy, and mass land reforms, do not happen, having a democracy or not would not affect anything in Pakistan; the hypothesis that as long as elections are held (aka democracy, because people tend to think democracy as just being something equivalent to holding elections), we will come out of our misery is incorrect. If the above mentioned steps are not taken, discontent will grow and prevail while extremism will be strengthened. We will never come out of a coma.
strongly object to the title. its gross generalization. ofcourse Pakistan has a future, Pakistan is never in question.
I'd agree that Imran Khan’s decision to leave the country at a time when the government wanted to bring all stakeholders on one table to try to find a solution is not encouraging. Most importantly, Pakistan having futures because we hitting the great off-drives yaaar. Finally, Meanwhile, Pakistan has reached an agreement with the IMF. And while everybody keeps saying that the IMF can only create more trouble and never offer solutions, this government seems confident that this time it will work.
Great op-ed. All we have to do is strive for fixing our problems sincerely just like rest of the sane world does and our life will be much better.
One thing that we need to be certain.. it takes thousand's of years for a Diamond to form. Give me an example of one country that, in a 66 years life, have been developed into an economic powerhouse, a safe place to live. Pakistan has a unique formation. Like a historian R.J Moore says:"Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three." This true for Pakistan, no country in the world has suffered as Pakistan did, and honestly speaking if we are suffering right now, we will be a strong nation in the future. HOW? Lets see, we are facing terrorism, economy fallout, health problems.. we, to solve these issues are making new laws, and are trying to solve it. Lets say, a country which doesn't face these challenges, they would probably be a failed state in the future as they have never faced any challenges and the laws they have will not help them when they'll face a challenging situation.
A country like Pakistan, with so much diversity in ethnicity, culture and in many more things, and are currently under the umbrella of Pakistan is a miracle itself. No country in this world, and no leader in this world like Quaid-a-Azam gather many different people from different ethnicity and brought them under the name of Pakistan.
At last let me give you an example of Germany, before World War I they were a powerhouse, but at the end of world war 1 they became weak and broke. But they used "extra" powers to comeback on their feet and then wage a war again this time called World War II. The results were not good, the country broke into two pieces, West and East Germany. Although they were back into one, it gives a tight lesson that any country that uses extra power to be powerful won't end up good.
Likewise we should go on and hope for our countries betterment, we should hope that in the coming of ages, our country can become a great nation. We should be proud that we are living in a soil that great leaders of this world once ruled. We have everything we want, we just need to clean our hearts and wait.
i actually agree with you but just to remind you that common people don't worry much about the democracy. people who always seem most worried about the democracy in pakistan are main culprits responsible for the severity of the above mentioned problems. And they are zardari and co.
Not unless radicalization is stopped and every province is given the right to own and use resources within its land.
