According to the sources, the outgoing governor had filed his resignation some time ago but the request was pending. Consequently, he applied for a two month leave from July 20, which resulted in a prompt action by the premiere.
The summary to accept the resignation has reached the prime minister, sources further added.
Since new name for the governor has not been finalised as yet, hence, the Speaker Punjab Assembly will perform the duties of the acting governor until a new governor is appointed.
Earlier in May, Ahmed Mehmood had announced his resignation two days after the general elections and had also declared that he would not take part in practical politics.
President Asif Ali Zardari rejected the resignation earlier only to accept it later in June, following the oath taking ceremony of the Punjab Chief Minister.

@Asif Butt: "Mr./Ms. Polpot , why make him the governor " Asif, we miss a KHALIFA, how about that?
@Asif Butt: "Why not make him the next CNC or the next Chief Justice." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Yes indeed but only when the vacancy opens up! Re Star Lead I have already written the story of Shere Punjab....
@Polpot:
Mr./Ms. Polpot , why make him the governor ?
Why not make him the next CNC or the next Chief Justice.
And if this is not possible , then atleast cast him as the next lead star in Bodyguard 2 or Dabang 3 or Nayak 2.
I'm sure he deserves it all , and only an activist/admirer of your "stature"?!?! can help make it happen....
@B.D. Naul: Sharifs are not FRISHTAAAY. but really why one can not Criticize acts of Sharif, Bhutto or even of Jinnah? they ALL made terrible mistakes and now people of Pakistan are paying very dearly, without right to say who is to be blamed.
Let Nawaz Sharif have it all and see if he succeeds. If he doesn't, a people's revolution is likely to occur which will sweep away the failed politicians. Actually, the problems of the country are so complex, intractable, and difficult, rather impossible to solve without extraordinary participation of the people at large that the present government is likely to fail, unless it shows exceptional dispatch, courage, and takes the people along. But let it try to succeed and let us meanwhile accept the level of concentration of power the present regime desires so that it has no excuse to defend its failures. I do, however, wish it success in the best interest of Pakistan but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
@ Polpot why don't you suggest Sharif Brothers to relinquish and give the cahnce to the veterans like Ahsan Iqbal and Nisaar Ali to becom President and PM in order to serve the nation. Why these brothers fancy theirselves to be the natural born sovreigns of Pakistan.
@Polpot: LOL..........
Mian sahib Please make some grand-kid of yours the new Governor of the largest province because you are the only deserving family to rule Pakistan. huh....... if u were there during Pakistan Movement; there would have been no place of Jinnah in the League. You are the ablest statesman on earth this is why you repeated the same mistake; committed by Bhutto Sahib. You also tried to manipulate the army by manipulating its top slot. Laughable.............
My 2 cents suggestion: Let Shabaz Sharif also handle the desk of the Governor +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I think it will radically improve things.
