ISLAMABAD: Standing Committee of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FPCCI) on Gwadar Promotion and Development Chairman Colonel (retd) Maqbool Afridi said the port city has the potential to take the country’s economy to great heights, and the Pakistan-China economic corridor could bring it in line with developed countries.

Talking to the media, the chairman said that Pakistan’s business community lauds plans to develop Gwadar, adding it has the potential to boost economic growth at a rapid rate. He welcomed the agreement signed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Beijing for the economic corridor, which includes a “long-term plan” to connect Kashgar in north-western China to Gwadar via a 2,000 km transport link.

He stated that in order to see this project materialise, government needs to provide security to investors and maintain the law and order in Balochistan, adding that the Baloch people should be taken on board for the development of the project.
