A man caught red handed robbing another was beaten up by citizens here on Monday.
While his accomplice fled, the robber was forced to confess to all the robberies he had committed. Citizens made him submit in writing and mention the areas he and his accomplices had robbed people in. He was later handed over to the police.
Some of the citizens later told The Express Tribune that they had made the robber write his confession so that the police could not free him later.
Muhammad Zaman, one of the citizens who beat the robber, said two men chased him shortly after he left a bank from where he had transacted Rs200,000. He said when he got suspicious about the two motorcyclists, and called his cousins who had businesses at a nearby market.
He said he told them to come to Vehari Square in Shah Rukne Aalam Colony and also bring along some other shopkeepers.
He said as soon as he stopped at the square, the two motorcyclists went close to him and demanded that he surrender the cash and his mobile phone.
He said his cousins and several other men also arrived at the scene. On seeing the men, he said, the robbers tried to flee.
One of them fled, but the second was caught and beaten up.
Police said the men dragged the robbers on the road. They made him write down all the robberies he had committed and later made him draw lines on the road with his nose for every robbery.
Someone informed police, but the citizens refused to hand him over to them saying that they did not trust the police. They later handed him over to the police on a condition that his accomplices, too, would be arrested in 24 hours.
The robber was taken to a hospital, from where he was then taken to the police station.
