Flawed policy of ‘strategic depth’

Letter July 05, 2013
Why are we so adamant at accepting the reality and so insensitive about condemning monstrosities?

QUETTA: This is with reference to Kamran Shafi’s article “Sadness in excess” (July 5). This was a great article in support of the hapless Hazara community living a life of perpetual fear. Most distressing is the fact that a majority of politicians, journalists and media outlets are frantically active to apologetically justify all the inhuman atrocities perpetrated by monsters targeting the community, attributing their acts to drone strikes.

Why are we so adamant at accepting the reality and so insensitive about condemning monstrosities? There could be many factors, but the most fundamental one has to do with our penchant for fixing Afghanistan in the ill-conceived perception that this is in Pakistan’s interest. To make this blatant intervention palatable, we christened this as “strategic depth”. This policy could only be implemented by using non-state actors. But every proxy that we have used, has gathered its critical mass and has its own agenda to implement and what we are witnessing is nothing but the aspirations of these groups to take over Pakistan.
