Investigations continue: Driver also joins suspects’ list in banker’s murder

Court tells police to record witnesses’ statements.

KARACHI: A district and sessions court told the investigating officer in the murder case of a former banker to record the statements of all witnesses.

During a hearing on Thursday, the court also extended the physical remand of the three suspects by a day. Mansoor Mujahid - the filmmaker of award-winning film ‘Seedlings’ - his female friend A, and another acquaintance, M - who had initially complained to the police about the murder - are all suspects in the murder of 33-year-old Faisal Nabi on the night between June 19 and June 20.

The police arrested Mujahid and A soon after M complained, but they later included her in the list of suspects as she kept changing her statement before the police. She was also with the suspects for over 16 hours that day, a police officer said.

As the case came up for hearing before district South judicial magistrate Hatim Aziz Solangi, investigating officer Irshan Karim requested the court grant more time for investigations. He added that the police have to arrest another suspect, Waseem, in the case as he has important details about the incident, which the police cannot share until he is arrested. Waseem was a driver of one of the suspects, said a counsel for the complainant, adding that he was unaware of the driver’s exact role in the case.

Karim also told the court that they have seized the suspects’ mobile phones, including M’s laptop and needed time to analyse the information in it. Earlier, Karim submitted an application before the court, requesting that he wanted to present three witnesses to record their statements under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the case. The court, while allowing the application, directed the police to bring the police file.
