KARACHI: A district and sessions court on Tuesday extended the physical remand of Mansoor Mujahid, an award-winning filmmaker of Seedlings [Lamha] fame, his female friend, A, and a woman, M, who had complained about the murder of a banker in Clifton, for three days.

The banker, Faisal Nabi, had gone to Mujahid’s apartment along with his friend, M, who later told the Clifton police about the incident, leading to the arrests of Mujahid and A. On Sunday, the police also arrested M and put her on trial for repeatedly changing her statements. She was on the witness list earlier.

Mujahid and A were accused of killing and disposing the body of Nabi after killing him at Mujahid’s flat on Zamzama on the night between June 19 and June 20. After the murder, Mujahid and A tried to burn the body by throwing acid on it and later dumped it in Clifton.

Hatim Aziz Solangi, a judicial magistrate in district South, extended physical remand for three days of the suspects.

The police investigators looking into the murder of the 33-year-old banker had gone to an anti-terrorism court (ATC), seeking remand of the suspects for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The ATC turned the request down again, saying that the alleged offence didn’t fall under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, said the investigating officer, Irshan Karim.

Karim told The Express Tribune that the ATC turned down the request of remand because acid was thrown on the banker’s body after he was killed, adding that if the suspects had burned the body before shooting then it would have fallen within the ambit of the ATC.
