KARACHI:

The opposition members of Sindh Assembly held a joint press briefing after they stormed out of the Sindh Assembly session on Saturday to protest the finance bill.

The press conference was addressed by opposition leader Faisal Subzwari of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Imtiaz Shaikh of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, Irfanullah Marwat of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Syed Hafizuddin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who rejected the budget. They felt that the budget will bring a tsunami of inflation in the province.

Referring to the chief minister’s budget speech, Subzwari said that, “The CM had earlier announced that the government will not increase taxation but he had backtracked on his commitment and has increased taxes.”

Sindh has set a new precedent by increasing 16 per cent GST on many items which were not taxable in the pervious governments, pointed out Marwat. “I have gone through the budget papers and finance bill, which will give nothing but miseries to the people,” he said.

Shaikh said that they would go to the masses to show how a so-called “peoples” government had put burden on their shoulders. “This budget will affect the socio-economic conditions of the people, forcing them to sleep on empty stomachs.”

Syed Hafizuddin of PTI said his party was assuming that the provincial government would give relief but it has presented an even more appalling budget than the federal government.
