ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday approved the Federal Finance Bill 2013, Radio Pakistan reported.
Acting on the advice of the prime minister, the president signed his assent to the bill, just over 24 hours before the new fiscal year begins.
The Finance Bill was passed in the National Assembly on Thursday.
With the signing of the bill‚ it has become a law and gives effect to the financial proposals of the federal government for the financial year beginning on the first July 2013.
On Thursday, the National Assembly approved with a majority, the finance bill which also includes the controversial and unpopular decision to increase general sales tax.
The lower house of Parliament session on Thursday also witnessed every single objection of the opposition to the Finance Bill 2013-14 being dismissed.
The total size of the budget which takes effect from July 1 is Rs3.59 trillion, including Rs207 billion in new taxes as the house passed several amendments in the earlier version of the finance bill tabled in the lower house.

@Saba: I suggest you find out what the role of the president is in a parliamentary democracy. He's the federation's president and has only ceremonial powers; bound by the will of the parliament and the advice of the leader of the house, aka the Prime Minister. Jeez!

@Saba: Because the Parliament approved it which includes his party as well as your party.
@Saba: well maam.. opposition will always oppose, that's their job, but it doesn't mean that President should delay signing the bill approved by parliament, this is parliamentary democracy and the system which we follow. President is of the state and there's no such thing exists as a "Party of the president", and if it happening so, ...the system is being ridiculed.
So what is the job of the president in Pakistan again? This is an honest question. If the president has the power to turn the bill in to a law, and if his party so strongly opposed this budget, why did the president approve it? If he had the power to stop this from happening why didn't he? I guess that goes to show that he always does what he's told to do.
