Zakir Mumtaz was taken to Jinnah Hospital for medical treatment on Wednesday after he fell ill.
The 50 year-old prisoner died from a suspected heart attack a day later, officials told Press Trust of India.
A resident of an Amritsar village, Mumtaz was arrested for an alleged illegal border crossover on August 3, 2011.
He was imprisoned in the Sheikhupura jail before being sent to the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.
The exact cause of death has still not been ascertained and would be confirmed after an autopsy.
Last month, an Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh succumbed to his injuries after suffering torture at the hands of the prison inmates in Central Kot Lakhpat jail.
He was taken to Jinnah hospital, where he died after slipping into a coma.
The Pakistani government had maintained that he was an Indian spy, but Sarabjit’s family said he was a farmer who accidentally crossed the border into Pakistan while drunk.
Another Indian prisoner Chamel Singh had died in Central Jail in April, amidst rumours that he was tortured. The Punjab prisons department, however, claimed that the rumours were part of a malicious propaganda and that the prisoner had only suffered a stroke.

@romm:
Did you ask his family if they want him to be buried in Pakistan and not India. Why do you have such a narrow minded approach that Pakistan is a land of pure for Indian Muslims. You forefather migrated? And the reason ? Mr Jinnah wanted him to, because he thought Hindu/Muslims couldn't do live each other. But he forgot to take all Muslims into Pakistan and sen all Hindus to India and made a big mess which was unnecessary.
Muslims are more safe in India than any other country. Sunni, Shia, Ahmedi don't fight here in India. Indian Muslims are well known all over the world for constructive work.
One of the richest Indian is Muslim. The only oscar winner Indian musician is muslim. Vice president is Muslim. Chief Justice is Muslim. Intelligence bureu chief is muslim. Foreign Minister is Muslim. Home minister of state is muslim. Bollywood is ruled by Muslims..four captain of cricket teams have been muslims... so many people in all walk of life and you say muslims are second class people in India. ?
BRAVO !
@TightPatloon:
Now we have to learn from Pakistan how to treat Indian Muslims? as if in Pakistan muslims are treated well. I can see not a single action is taken when Pakistani Muslims are killed in drone attacks..by US..
And when an Indian muslim SRK is just interrogated at US airport whole India rallied behind him and US apologize. This is called power.
As an indian, I am very disappointed with this story. It looks like "more things change, more they remain the same'. After all the hullabaloo regarding the earlier deaths at the respective hands of both countries, incidents like this continue to happen with such impunity and frequency.
I sincerely pray and hope that the relevant Pakistani authorities would conduct a fair and impartial investigation and take action based on the findings. These sort of news does not bode well when it comes to strengthening the relationship between the two countries and only please the conservative hawks on both sides of the border who would wish nothing more than maintaining the status quo of more violence and harsh retribution.
Live and let live people. As cheesy and corny as it sounds, we need each other for the betterment of our respective countries and such actions only sets us further back from unleashing the potential of our people. Higher order thinking is the need of the hour.
@Prabhjyot Singh Madan: Amnesty India, I am sure are the most frustrated faces in India. If his family is given the choice, I am sure they would love him to be buried in pakistan, but then their life would be miserable in india due to muslim identity. May be this gentleman is patriot Indian but would always have been treated second grade citizen. My forefathers migrated from India and I am one million percent sure that they gave me wonderful future. By the way, I am not Muslim.
@Abc: Humanity has no country residentship. I would request all Pakistanis to to be repatriated. My compaderie here like to see the pak govt do the same."khudah Kay ham banday eik". Rab rakha
@Romm: I understand, their family are in the newspapers here. Cardiac arrest whatever, he deserves to lie in peace of his family choice. I feel sad when a Pakistani dies in our jail but it it is rarely because amnesty India does not let indian government Live in peace. Sarabjit chamel and now zakir. I am sure all Indians are sad at this news. I wish all Pakistani people in our jail left out and our Indian brothers out ......rest in peace zakir, we will miss you like sarabjit and chamel all fellow Indians.inshallah...rab rakha
@Water Bottle Simply superb! My salute to your sense of humor boss.
Why is this news? Why are the media organizations trying to create controversy by highlighting such nes when there are hundred of prisoners in extrmely plightful conditions? Why are the medi aoutlets refusing to play their role to portray the country is a posiitve light injstead of focusing on negative aspects only?
@Water Bottle
" “An Indian prison died from a suspected cardiac attack in Lahore on Thursday, officials told Press Trust of India.”
"This is horrible. Pakistan must conduct a thorough inquiry into it and find out who this Cardiac was, who paid him to attack the prisoner and if there’s a bigger conspiracy behind this Cardiac." "
:- ) Oh GOD. I laughed so hard and still laughing. You win the comic Nobel prize for this one.
My condolences to the family of deceased. ..Nelson Lives
We will see more of this as the government presses ahead with improving relations with India and trying Musharraf for treason.
This unfortunate person was just charged will illegally crossing the border. He was not suspected to be a spy. Why just not return him like India returned the couple this week without imprisonment ? so sad.
@Prabhjyot Singh Madan: He won't be buried in jail premises during dark hours like Guru. Be rest assured that his body wud be handed over to his family.
@TightPatloon:
Well if we go by your logic that everything is driven by religion, it probably explains why hardly anyone has commented here http://tribune.com.pk/story/569245/pakistani-origin-briton-members-of-paedophile-gang-jailed-for-life/
But may I ask why hardly anyone has commented here - after all it was 3 Muslim women who were killed here?http://tribune.com.pk/story/569174/murdering-free-spirit/
So if the Judicial inquries constituted for the earlier Indian Prisoners who died in Pakistani Jails ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ have been completed then this one can commence.
Let us not play politics over a dead man's body , just send his body back to his family so he can be given a graceful burial .Zakir Mumtaz RIP
He was Indian spy sent to create terroist attacks.
Poor soul. RIP..
@Prabhjyot Singh Madan:
I would like to hear the very same response from your side when a person of Pakistani citizenship in similar case suffers similar problems. Its going to be very hard for you to treat every one equally but you can do it if you wanted.
Another example of Muslims killing Muslims.
Waiting for a "tsunami" from across the border...oh wait the poor chap is muslim so no tsunami
How can muslims kill muslims? Must be a RAW conspiracy.
Is one more likely to have a heart attack in Pakistani jails? And don't they even spare Indian Muslim prisoners?
People die in the jail and out of jail. No need sensualize the news, dear Pakistani tabloid newspaper
Pakistan to revive backdoor diplomacy with India...
So what? You don't have any other news ET!!!!
Zakirs family should have the right to perform his last rites according to Islam here in his country India.please don't bring religion into it. He was an Indian and our brother. Please no wise cracks. He is the same like sarabjit and chamal, our fellow Indian citizen. God bless his soul. Rab rakha.
