The federal cabinet on Monday endorsed a document seeking to try former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for high treason under Article 6 of the Constitution.
Sources said the cabinet discussed the pros and cons of the case before giving its nod. “It’s not for the satisfaction of my personal grudge but it will be a lesson for those [military rulers] who play our role [as elected representatives],” sources quoted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as telling the cabinet.
Nawaz also decided to keep the charge of the law ministry with him in order to monitor the proceedings of the high treason trial, sources said.
He also took the cabinet into confidence over the government’s response that the attorney general submitted in the Supreme Court later in the day.
The cabinet also condemned the killing of 10 foreign tourists and their Pakistani cook at a Nanga Parbat base camp and expressed their sorrows over the incident. The prime minister termed the incident a national tragedy and directed the interior minister to ensure the arrest of culprits.
