The policemen were shot from point blank range when they were on a regular patrol near the main court complex located in a busy commercial district of Srinagar, a senior police official said.
"Both the policemen died at the spot. We don't know as yet who carried out the attack," city police chief Ashiq Bukhari told AFP.
The attack comes at a time when security is being stepped up in the region ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early next week.
Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan along the UN-monitored Line of Control (LoC), but both countries claim the region in full and have fought two of their three wars over it.

pakistan vs India
ET your reporting is biased more than 1000 people have died in the floods in Uttarakhand in India , there as been no mention of that in your paper so far .
ET is right, it is Indain Kashmir, always has been and always will be.
@afzaal khan:
what difference does it make? it will always be Indian occupied Kashmir.
@utkarsh srivastava:
Actually most of the brutalities that Pakistanis attribute to Indian army are conspiracy theories. Out of a small percentage of truth, most are actually committed by Kashmiri police, who are predominantly muslims. The rape of women which resulted in riots a couple of years ago was also committed by Kashmiri police. However, the separatists whi are on Pakistani payroll, did make it into anti-Indian issue and played with the emotions of the naive -public.
Both the policemen were Kashmiri Muslims. Sigh!
Ohhhhhh ET ---- It is Indian occupied Kashmir and not Indian Kashmir....
ET either stop doing copy paste from AFP or when you do make sure you are changing it according to Pakistan. SAFMA loving website should be banned in Pakistan. It is indian occupied Kashmir.
The two policemen were Kashmiri Muslims --- even they were not spared by militants
