Pakistan’s woeful campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy came to an end yesterday with a humiliating eight-wicket defeat against India summing up the team’s pathetic run in the event.
The highly-anticipated encounter in front of 22,000 boisterous flag-waving supporters from both sides who packed the Edgbaston stands, was interrupted several times by bad weather over Birmingham.
In a match that was initially reduced to 40-overs-a-side, Pakistan were shot out for 165 in 39.4 overs after India captain MS Dhoni elected to field in overcast conditions.
India were set a Duckworth-Lewis target of 168 in 40 overs, which was later revised to 157 off 36 overs, before another rain delay reduced it to 102 in 22.
India, who were 63 for one in 11.3 at that stage, scored the remaining runs with 17 balls to spare to end their Group B engagements with an all-win record.
Shikhar Dhawan, century-maker against both the West Indies and South Africa, hit a fluent 48 after sharing an opening stand of 58 with Rohit Sharma.
After both openers were dismissed, Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik saw India home in a match that held only academic interest for the tournament.
Pakistan, who had already been knocked out of the semi-final race after losing their previous two games against the West Indies and South Africa, will return home with three successive defeats.
Dhoni’s men await the second-placed team from Group A – to be determined after the last round of league matches today and tomorrow – in the semi-final in Cardiff on Thursday.
South Africa, runners-up to India in Group B, will play the champion side from Group A in the first semi-final at Oval, London, on Wednesday.
Pakistan batsmen fail again
Earlier, India put on a dazzling display in the field as Pakistan were shot out for less than 200 and failed to last their allotted quota of overs for the third successive time in the tournament. Four bowlers claimed two wickets each and the last two batsmen were run out.
Asad Shafiq top-scored with 41 and Umar Amin made 27 not out, but there was no respite for Pakistan’s batting woes.
Opener Nasir Jamshed, whose previous five innings against India included three centuries and a half-century, managed only two when he was snapped up in the slips off Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.
Pakistan plodded to seven for one in the first five overs, before a boundary by Mohammad Hafeez off Umesh Yadav, produced a flurry of fours from either end.
Pakistan moved to 50 for one in 12 overs when a 15-minute interruption due to light rain caused them further trouble.
Hafeez, who hit five boundaries in his 27, fell on the first ball after resumption, edging Kumar to a diving Dhoni behind the stumps.
Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq helped Shafiq put on 54 runs for the fourth wicket on either side of a second rain stoppage, before he was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 22.
Shafiq was dismissed with the help of a television review after umpire Richard Kettleborough initially rejected a catch down the leg-side by Dhoni off Ishant Sharma.
Misbah said the batting performance was again a disappointment. “It was a disappointing performance again with the bat,” said Misbah. “The weather also played a role and it was difficult to get in and out so many times. I think the bowling did okay for us and the way they are establishing themselves is really a plus for Pakistan.”

Thank god you are not the selector after watching all the matches you think pak team is 10 times better Yes they are 10 times better in giving away matches and loosing games Poor pakistan angoor khatte hai@Shahrukh Aziz: I
Well played India. PCB really needs to sit and let the sifarishi players go. If Hafeez is made the next captain, that would be the last big mistake they make. Asad Shafiq should be the captain.
@Shankaracharya: Well said. It is true that Pakistan’s only benchmark is India. It is quite evident from their TV shows how obsessed they are with India. Every single show be it talk show or entertainment show invariably talks about India. What is more amusing is that they would boast that their music, fashion or cricket is much better than India. Then how come their singers, musicians , actors throng our country begging for work. Indians being magnanimous as they are, give them breaks in the movies. The very actors go back & talk ill of India on their TV shows. Talk of double standards, no prizes for guessing the winner….
The only thing they could do to have a new beginning is to stop pretending and boasting about their non-existent achievements. Be humble & learn from the Indians and their success in every field not just cricket, instead of comparing to India in vain. It sure will do a lot good for their alter ego.
@Shahrukh Aziz: Oh!excuse me.Wasn't it your team's Captain who said this match is like a final?Or am I wrong?
Why blame the cricketers alone? With the kind of terror grip Pakustan is at the moment, how can anyone expect that anybody can give 100% to his/her profession? Can anyone concentrate on the task in hand when there is always a nagging fear of safety of near and dear ones? To build a good team first of all Pakistan needs is peace and security in country. No amount of talent or hardwork will work if the mind is not without fear.
@Shankaracharya: "its not surprising that Indian’s are not beating their chests any more upon winning a game of cricket against Pakistan. There clearly are more worthwhile pursuits."
Very well explained. Indians have moved on. To today's YOUNG Indians, Pakistan, whether it be Cricket or anything else, doesn't carry much weight. To most, it is more like a nuisance who keeps spoiling their party as you have rightly mentioned.
@sherrry: Oh people like u will forever be missing senior cricketers. Think about your team. Since he is out of form, what's the use in him playing? Let go of them and bring in young hungry lads. Your lala wouldn't have done anything special. He has served his time well, got his due respect. Its time for u ppl to concentrate on your country's young talent. .
@Dhawan: "we lost interest in your weak team. They no longer are our worthy rivals as they once used to be the ages ago."" "ages ago" com on man It was January 2013 that we trash you in your backyard.
Pakistan needs players who can use their brains. No point in keeping trying with brainlless players incapable of listening, watching and learning from others.
as I said, India is behind this too
Why pakistan loosing every thing against India?? Cricket,War etc you name it....Its a shame
@Shahrukh Aziz: Yas since you lost, its a waste of time.Otherwise will tell that this is a crucial match...
Remove the Hafeez, Akmal, Malik, Farhat and keep the same team with new under 19 players like Baber, Hammad, Anwar Ali etc. Keep the bowlers intact.
Misbah should serve us for 1 more year, till we groom another captain to lead.
Another note, this team should represent Merit, not association with Punjab. It is a Pakistan team not a team from one province
chill out guys. India are better team in this CT and we were horrible but that doesn't mean India is ahead of us by too much. We gave them a very decent series loss earliar in the year. The thing i like about current India team is their will to do basic things of cricket. They run between wickets well. they field awesome and they have a positive attitude towards game. Pakistan needs a bit changes in batting order and they should play with freedom.
@Shahrukh Aziz: Well yes it was a dead rubber match but Pakistan media and whole country made it a question of pride. Misbah reflected the same. For India, every game won is a time of enjoyment and to jump up and down. You don't like it, turn the face away.I know your team is not giving you much chances for that. Also if CT was not important then Pakistan should not have sent the team.Stick to your domestic cricket.Grapes are sour for guys like you. Also if Pakistan depends upon its day to win a match then i guess you void your argument of Pakistan team being 10X better than India. On a better day, Canada can beat Pakistan too. About the rain, well rain helped delaying Pakistan's misery but could not stop it. And yes, Sri Lanka is second best team after India. Pakistan is just a notch better than Bangladesh but not for long though.
what happnd 2 my comments??
RIP pakistani cricket. Thank you for your service to world cricket. You were good. but not anymore. Frankly speaking, none of the member in this team deserve to play even for Japan cricket team as somebody pointed out. Next time Come back with few of akrams and Inzys..
whatever.. we thnk we r fighing a huge battle. if we r givn a chance, will we ask 4 partition? all i cn do is smile :-)
@Vasan: "No whinging and wining by Pakistanis and no chest beating by Indians yet. Surprising"
Not really if you think through a bit.
Pakistan's singular and existential point of reference is India. But India has long shaken off Pakistan's clinging to it and has marched on. India's aspirations are well and truly on a place of significance in the world stage. Pakistan's is more essentially a question of survival. Survival of its very identity to begin with and then its viability as a nation. Pakistan has always been very conscious and made most of its ability to spoil India's party by throwing the odd spanner in the works. Now, the sinking feeling that Pakistan is beginning to have is that it is beginning to lose that ability as well and with that any attention it tends to get, even if it is of the wrong kind.
This phenomenon, as is consistent with all natural processes, can be observed in most spheres - nation building, politics, culture and sports. Given this, its not surprising that Indian's are not beating their chests any more upon winning a game of cricket against Pakistan. There clearly are more worthwhile pursuits.
@Shahrukh Aziz: sour grapes! hahahahaha
@Ghati: whatever happened to the claim that One Pakistani is equal to ten Indians?
It is time now to terminate contracts of all players, All. Start afresh by signing under 19 players team as Team Pakistan and bring only 3 or 4 players above 19 yrs age - maximum upto 22 yrs age to be seniors. All new and young players need to be groomed to have attitude to win. Undisciplined lot and political lot should and must be axed, and made to stay away from Pakistan cricket. So what if pakistan does not win any trophy in next 2 to 3 years, its OK to be there and fight it out. Laxed and lethargic attitude players should be replaced with a minimum no selection ban of 3 years of no selection to team Pakistan on the non performing players. Unless we do it and apply the strict terms, we will be the joke of all teams who play us internationally. We should be laughing on our successes rather than be laughed upon and be disgraced.
Pakistan need reforms and changes from top to bottom We can not expect a tired, ageing, direction less and hopeless bunch of boys to fight against top teams. Cricket has become an athletic game as much as a skill game. Unless we change with the world, there is no hope.
@Ghati we lost interest in your weak team. They no longer are our worthy rivals as they once used to be the ages ago.
A defeat is not final, until you stop trying ... I am sure Pakistan will look into its weakness and work on it besides building of its strenth. If two teams play, one will win .. mostly! . This is just a game and we should not get unduely hurt or be over joyous by the result.
@ivehadit: Not only Misbah but the entire PCB requires a colossal overhaul from top to bottom. The management, administration, and operation by the cricketers including the PCB Constitution, which was recently adopted under threat from ICC. The President and the PM must play no part and the law of the PCB Constitution must be the sole operational STUD. To know what is meant here, the presentation given by Sikander Bakht (during the match) on a popular TV channel, throws a floodlight on the failings of the PCB and how to set it in the right direction. Great presentation Sikander. Salams
@Shahrukh Aziz: It was not Pakistan’s day otherwise our team is 10 times better than India and real cricket fans knows that. Maybe you could let us know the "day" in advance so that we can schedule matches that are more convenient to you. Patriotism is always respected, but inability to face the truth is a particularly fascinating Pakistani trait.
@Shahrukh Aziz: Sour grapes mate. feel sorry for you. Your team could not win a single game on CT! also your batsmen could not score more than 200 in a single game ! India will be happy to play srilanka in the semis, because srilankans are india's favourite punching bag. so cheer up.
We are serious about you people this time, for the first time in my cricket loving years, i admit that i didnt feel patriotic about my green team. i apologize my to my green Flag. i will not let you down again.
IPL has many flaws no doubt about it, but it's a great asset for DEDICATED cricketers. It helps them maintain their form and learn new skills. These Indian lads fresh out of the last IPL season know ways to win matches, while the pakistani players appear rusted. BTW why isn't Umar akmal playing?
Good news for Pak's cricketing future!
congratulations for India, they are really playing like professionals and our as kids except a couple of players. I hope cricket doesn't get the same fate what our hockey has got.
i think indian team give an staunch answar to all those critics who predicted that IPL dillema may diminish team india performance
Why do Pakistanis always lose everything ? Always.
pakistani team couldn't score beyond 180. Pakistani cricket is in shatters and it will remain so until the sifarshi players are kicked out.
A lot was expected from pakistan, especially coz they were not a present at the IPL and were rested and hungry. when ur scores read 160-170 in each of the matches, which are hard to defend even in a t20 game, no matter how divine the bowling be, it'll always be a tough ask to defend it...
No whinging and wining by Pakistanis and no chest beating by Indians yet. Surprising. Anyway Bye Bye Pakistan.
The result is no surprise especially against India. They can drop Gambhir, Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer and others and still have great opening pair. Each of these discarded players has much better test records than Pakistan's current batsmen. Unless we nurture more than one bat for each position there would be no progress. Hafiz, Afridi and Malik could be great all-rounders but only against mediocre teams and not in trying conditions and wickets.
Masha Allah, this silence is deafening! I wonder what ever happened to all those Indian trolls ready to pounce on poor Pakistanis every time there was some sort of victory to India against Pakistan! C'mon guys, some words of postmortem from both sides of the border!
Please come back pakisani team !!!
Rain helped India a lot to win this match, anyway Champions trophy is useless but Pakistan should start preparing for World Cup and TEST championship because that's real cricket and this type Champion trophy is useless waste of time and will come and go. Thanks ICC scraped it for future. BTW I noticed ,Y some Indian r celebrating jumping up and down a dead rubber match as if they have won WORLD CUP ?? or Final match of trophy ? It was not Pakistan's day otherwise our team is 10 times better than India and real cricket fans knows that.Anyway India will be out in next match and Srilanka,The second best team from Asia will win the cup this time.
Pathetic showing from the batsmen. Immature shot selection from players such as hafeez and akmal who have been part of the pakistan set up for 10 years now. Only Misbah, Shafiq, Jamshed and Umar Amin( played well today) should be retained for future tours and the rest of the batsmen should be dropped. Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohd Rizwan and Azhar Ali should be brought in and the PCB must ensure all its efforts go into building a solid team for the 2015 world cup. This process should have really started after the 2011 tournament though ( with this CT being a litmus test)
...Great attempt by Malik/Akmal/Hafeez in this tournament.. to get rid of Misbah as Captain... similar to what they did to Younis... to Afridi...
India is a different country now. The Indians, whether it be ET pages, cricket, or in any other country are beaming with confidence and have gotten rid of the inferiority complex of the yesteryear's. You can see this in every Indian youngster. It is just so obvious.
Misbah, it's time to call it a day. You did really well for Pakistan.
Let us admit that a team selected on merit, played better and the inferior team lost it. Lets not find an escape goat to blame.
miss you lala
