KARACHI:

Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Kamran Michael has said that the Pakistan Deep Water Containers Port, located adjacent to Karachi Port, will be completed by the end of next year.

The minister was talking to journalists after visiting the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) headquarters here on Friday.

Michael also said his ministry will clear all kinds of encroachments on port land. He said that there will be visible improvement in all facilities, including the ports under the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, within the next 90 days.

Senator Michael said that the Ministry of Ports and Shipping has great potential and the facilities and organisations associated with it can play a very important role in promoting economic prosperity and the development of the country.

“The performance of all facilities and organisations will be assessed after every three months,” the minister said. He added that the government will soon make Gwadar Port active and construct a road network connecting Gwadar to Kashgar in China. “We will lay a network of railways and roads up to China and Afghanistan,” he claimed.

“We are working hard day and night to make Pakistan an economic superpower,” he continued. “The government will utilise all available resources instead of looking for any outside support or aid,” he added.

Senator Michael said that he will visit Karachi every week to monitor the functioning of those organisations and facilities under his control. He also requested the media to support the government in its efforts to contain corruption and mismanagement by highlighting any suspicious activity in public sector organisations and departments in a timely manner.

Responding to a query about the workings of the ‘son quota’, the minister clarified that the employment of an ex-employee’s children under the ‘son quota’ is not legitimate after the retirement of the employee.

He clarified that a child can only be employed in his or her father’s or mother’s position if the father or mother expires during their service to the organisations in which the quota is applicable.
