The vigilante siege of an office on Turner Road, where a weekly magazine owned by an Ahmadi family is produced, has not been lifted two months after it began, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Since the siege began, the circulation and publishing of the weekly, The Lahore, has stopped. The anti-Ahmadi activists have not only stopped the magazine’s administration from entering the office, located on the first floor of Galaxy Law Chambers, but also have not let them take away the printed material and furniture from the office.

The men patrol the spot round-the-clock so that nothing can be removed from the premises.

Jamaat-i-Ahmadia Pakistan spokesperson Saleemudin said the siege laid by a group of extremists was part of a campaign against Ahmadis. They had also lodged several false FIRs under the blasphemy law against Ahmadis, he said.

“They forced the magazine’s owners to leave the place and are now stealing their possessions from the office with the connivance of the police,” he said.

Saleemudin said they were trying to victimise the magazine staff for their religious beliefs.

He said they were pressuring the police to register an FIR against them. “Instead of providing them security, the police appear to be encouraging the extremists to continue the siege,” he said.

Muhammad Yaqoob, a member of the United Khatam-i-Nabuwat told The Express Tribune that they had laid siege to the office to “Get God’s blessings”. He said the magazine carried blasphemous content and should be banned. He said at least eight of their men remained at the office to prevent Ahmadis from entering the office and removing material from it. “We will remove it ourselves with help from the police after we manage to have an FIR registered against them under blasphemy laws,” he said.

He said an additional sessions judge had ordered the registration of an FIR, but the police were favouring the Ahmadis by not registering it.

He said a contempt of court petition had been moved before the Lahore High Court for the implementation of the court’s orders for the registration of an FIR.

According to Yaqoob’s application, he requested the police to register an FIR under Sections 298-C, 295 (B), 295 (C) and Section 11-W of the Anti Terrorism Act against magazine publisher Mian Muhammad Shah Jee, editor Yasir Zervi, Yasir Mansoor Ahmed and two others. He said that he had seen Yasir Zervi and two others circulating copies of the magazine on April 23. He said he too was given a copy of the magazine and had found blasphemous content in it.

He requested the police to seize everything in the office and seal it forever.

Munawar Ali Shahid, an Ahmadi and a rights activist, told The Express Tribune that Poet Saqib Zervi had started the weekly, The Lahore, in 1951. It was published every Friday, he said.

Zervi died in 2001 and his sons Yasir Zervi and Mansoor Zervi took over.

He said the magazine had been publishing social, cultural, political, economic and literary material for the last 62 years, but had now fallen prey to anti-Ahmadi elements.

When will somebody in the Government have the courage to uphold the rule of law? Pakistani constitution gives full protection to Ahmadis as non-muslims.

What to say. Ahmadi were the source of finance and political say during the creation of Pakistan. Funny, ahmadis here in India are Muslims in all aspects, never heard anyone say he is a ahmadi. I learnt all this from Pakistan. But really sad, god help the family.

The news paper project one side as extremists and other side are projected as completely innocent. The purpose of publishing the magazine is to flare up the emotions of the people and results is violence, death and destruction in the country. Such publications falls in the category of hate material. Why should they publish material which hurts the feelings of large majority of people of this country?
Life and property of the people of Pakistan should not be put on stake for one person who wants to vent the heats of his emotions against Islam in the name of freedom of expression. This publisher may be doing it for some sponsor who wants to damage the country and motivate violence.

What sanctimonious drivel from the sort of uninformed ignorant mindset that has plunged Pakistan in to the dark ages.

Viciousness has been and will remain a yardstick to wield society by ill-influence. By targeting weaker sections goal is achieved conveniently. Ahmadies being weak in strength and lacking state protection, are easy to target and hence every ill-natured is after them.

In any case on one hand, Muslims try to convert others to Islam anad here there are people that call themselves Muslim who are being punished for no crime greater than the fact they believe in Islam. If they write the kalima on their grave, their graves are defaced. Instead of indulging in the reflexive hatred, consider whether it is for humans to determine what someone’s faith. The fact that some outsiders come and comment against Pakistan on a Pakistani website makes me wanna flare up, i don’t know why they are not moderated. For those who are saying that Pakistan was better off with India are completely out of their minds. The situation that Pakistan is dealing now did not start form its birth, Pakistan was a prosperous country in the 1960’s and 1970’s, even after the formation of Bangladesh Pakistani tasted some success and growth. It all started after and during the Afghan War and Pakistan is still suffering from it. Now do Indians really think if Pakistan would be with them, we all would have been prosperous, I don’t think so. India with its population being 1,210,569,573, if was with Pakistan, there would be 183,391,000 addition. I don’t think that would be great. Then the Afghan refugee’s and all the clashes between Hindu and Muslims, could have led to a civil war, it should be clear that Pakistan would be formed no matter what, either in 1947 or later.
Plus Indians have their own problems, they should deal with it on their own and stop menacing around with our problems Pakistan will find a good solution for sure. They should worry now about their fast decline in economy that started last year, i think more that half of you wouldn’t know about this, you are still believing that your economy is in a rise, well its declining rapidly and experts have not come up with a solution yet. Plus your poverty and growing middle class which causes one of the most drastic gaps i.e. economy gap. and don;t forget 153+ seperatist movements.

as far as Ahmadi’s are concerned, i would like to give a small religious view on this. Islam says its not right to call someone who calls himself a Musalman a non-Muslim. If Ahmadi’s call them selves Muslims we have no right to call them non-muslims. (it could be right to call them Ahmadi muslims though)
and if the government even thinks that Ahmadi’s are non-muslims then we should give them adequate security and rights. This can be started by bringing all the Ahmadi’s from the lower sector up for negotiations and devise an adequate plan. As far as i know these Ahmadi muslims are bound to hide their identities now.

Thanks but No Thanks,Countries like Saudi Arab or Pakistan are no examples for India to emulate and we do not wish to add one more item to the laundry list of challenges facing our liberal democracy. Btw Numerous such efforts to declare Ahmadis as non-Muslims have been witnessed here as well but thankfully our learned Courts and Judges have already ruled that Ahmedis are Muslims and until further directions, that is what has been and will be followed in future . This magzine Lahore is a Cultural Magazine. it is owned by family of Saqib Zeervi Sahib. who was an Icon of individual journalism in Pakistan. The magazine did a great job in creating harmony and love among communities of different opinion. The magazine was under siege due to owners being of an Ahmadi.

The difference opinion is in-tolerated in my country where all ethical and human values are diminishing by the course of time.
Saqib Zeervi an esteemed journalist from the breed of journalists who were from the Line of Zafar Ali Khan .Majeed Salik and Ghulam Rasool Mehar. This magazine always raised a voice against continuous oppression and coercion against Ahmadis.
At the Moment this kind of magazine are a worth for the country. but the Coward Urdu press can not write a single word against this barbarian attack against the freedom of speech and thought.

what i can say is just a verse of Akbar Hameedi

In Pakistan the Jumat opponents have used all their tactics to harm Jumat members, its institutions to stop the progress of Jumat but all the times they have failed & the Jumat progressed by the grace of God. A country which should be thankful to Ahmadis for valuable services is victimizing them at all levels. Did you see for yourself that blasphemous material? You cannot actually trust anyone these days!

@Azhar Rehman: Yes my dear. People believe the propaganda. Allah says:

“Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge. Verily the ear, the eye, the heart, each will be questioned”. (17:36)

The real blasphemy is not believing Muhammad as messenger of God. All Christians, Jews, Himdus and those other than those who call themselves Muslims, dont believe that he was messenger of God. Will they fight with all ot them? They cannot. They cannot even think of doing that.

I know HMGA of Qadian did not do any bad. He could not do any good even. Why to waste energies?

@Zaid Hamid: “And then, Pakistan was created for minorities” that is how Jinnah represented it.
