Thousands of flood affectees in southern Punjab remain helpless as the winter season approaches.

LAHORE: Thousands of flood affectees in southern Punjab remain helpless as they have no blankets, warms clothes or homes with the winter season less than two months away.

The changing weather has already claimed the lives of two children in Fazal Pur.

Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajan Pur, Taunsa, Jam Pur, Kot Addu, Muzzaffargarh, Mehmood Kot Sanawaan and other adjoining areas are still submerged under water.

The flood affectees living in these areas have launched an urgent appeal to the government to provide them with a place to live and for warm clothes before winter sets in.

Waterborne and skin diseases are also spreading in these areas.

UK envoy visits IDP camp

The British High Commissioner Adam Thomson, while visiting an IDP camp in Kemari town in Karachi, said that the British government wants greater involvement of its business community to increase trade and help Pakistan rehabilitate after the floods.

Thomson said that the British government's assistance to Pakistan is its greatest contribution to any disaster worldwide while insisting that international aid will not be sufficient for Pakistan's post flood rehabilitation requirements. He stressed on the need for local sources to generate aid.

The United Kingdom has committed a total of 18 billion rupees towards relief efforts while the UK public has donated another Rs7.5 billion.
