Tech savvy: PHC directs ministries to expedite process of shifting inmates

Says prisoners remain incarcerated for months prior to appearing in courts in other provinces.

PESHAWAR:

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday directed the interior ministry and inter provincial coordination ministry to rework the process of shifting inmates from one prison to another.

PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan issued these orders while hearing a petition filed by Malik Parvez.



Counsel for Parvez, Aminur Rehman Yousafzai informed the court his client was nominated in an FIR registered at Cantonment police station, Faisalabad following his arrest in April by Paharipura police station, Peshawar.

Yousafzai added Faisalabad police did not proceed with the case for nearly two months. A few days ago, police produced the record and shifted Parvez to Punjab from Central Jail Peshawar, making his client suffer for two months, claimed Yousafzai.

In response to the counsel’s arguments, Justice Khan observed justice is delayed unnecessarily in the process of shifting inmates from one province to another. He also remarked criminals involved in petty crimes remain behind bars for months because of the lack of an effective system.



Justice Khan maintained there were flaws in the process of shifting prisoners, forcing people to remain locked up in jail for months prior to appearing in courts in other provinces.He deemed it necessary for the system to be streamlined to ensure the provision of justice promptly.
