American business magnate and Microsoft founder Bill Gates has pledged to help eradicate polio from Pakistan, soliciting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s help to check the disease in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Bill Gates’ letter to Imran Khan asking for his party’s cooperation comes at a time when polio cases are fast surfacing in Pakistan. Some 67 polio cases have been reported in the country over the past 17 months alone, according to the Expanded Programme on Immunisation.
An official statement issued by the PTI Central Secretariat confirmed that the letter was received. Bill Gates’ commitment to polio eradication has resulted in his support for a massive anti polio programme in Pakistan, added the statement.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $1.8 billion in April this year to fight polio in countries hit by the virus.
“Khan is scheduled to speak to Gates on the phone to discuss modalities of moving against polio in K-P,” said a senior party leader.
“We will fight against the polio virus together,” he added.
Some 160,000 children missed vaccination in K-P, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Balochistan due to security reasons since June 2012, health officials told The Express Tribune on Friday.
Polio workers have been regularly attacked by militants in K-P. Last year, the Taliban banned vaccination in the Waziristan region, deeming the health programme a cover for espionage.
There are roughly 0.21 million polio workers working in the country at present.
As Pakistan’s authorities offered little effective protection for such workers, international organisations like the World Health Organisation and United National Children International Children’s Emergency Fund have limited their operations.
WHO teams usually stay away from the areas which are severely threatened but operate in safe localities, said WHO Polio team leader Dr Nima Saeed Abid.
“We’ve engaged religious scholars, diplomats and the federal government to approach areas where the polio virus is spreading,” Abid told The Express Tribune. Abid added that the health body was not operating in North Waziristan.
Meanwhile, Unicef officials told The Express Tribune that their polio eradication campaign is currently operating in 37 districts with a network of over 1, 000 people.

Its interesting how we all want to see Bill Gates money spent on Polio in Pakistan. Philanthropy is not a Muslim thing anymore? Where are all the Oil rich muslim countries? Another thing, why are we so used to getting free money from USA? As a nation, when would we rise to the occasion and take care of our own financial problems. Today's news is about Pakistani government increasing the defence budget by 10 percent. Why is the priority NOT education in our country?
The American music icon is helping schools in Karachi, Bill Gates is helping with polio where are are rich oil Muslim brothers building Dubai using their Muslim brothers paying slave wages? Yet we dare call America the SATAN? The flow of compassion is diluted by rants of why Gates chose Imran Khan. Does it matter? Beggars cannot be users we have to accept scraps offered by our actions of the down spiraling of the respect of human life. We should not need a billionaire we should not depend on the goverment each of us should on a community basis should improve & make our living area safe. Look around you the streets are piled with rubbish & garbage. The sewer flowing on the streets people struggling for electricity & clean water the sanitation conditions deplorable increasing the chances for disease. The track record of Pakistanis helping their fellow citizens is despicable every one expects the other to do it. If we continue in this path we will continue to live in a miserable environment.
This shows that people don't trust are government rather they trust Imran Khan. Imran khan zindabad
Bill Gates should first help Imran Khan to improve the Law n order situation in KPK and then Imran Khan will be able to help in polio program.
If he is a sincere person, should visit KPK like Imran Khan.
I think America is playing a very tricky game.
They empowered Nawaz Sharif for the faith of our country and ? pushing Imran Khan in to the dangerous zone ????
Imran should grab this chance(as he is the only person in Pakistan, after BB and Musharraf whom the world listen to intently. He should invite Bill to KPK to see for himself what these drone have done to Pakistan.IK has the charms to convince Bill and a strong lobby is created in US for Anti-drone policy.
His foundation should instead focus on getting electricity for the people of Pakistan that suffer everyday because they don't have a basic neccessity of modern day, Regardless of priorities, Thank You bill, for thinking of us.
@Fyza: Lol he only approached him because his party is in power in KPK. IK no messiah.
Bill Gates should think twice before donating his hard earned money. It likely may end up in the hands of PTI's coalition partners Jamaatis and they can use his donations to build madrassahs and mosques as terror dens.
Bill gates should also help KPK in education.
It's funny that Bill Gates approached IK to do his philanthropic work and not the other members of the leading parties. Maybe he knew his money would be in safe hands with IK!
@MyHeartSpeaks:
Ask a young child who is suffering from a preventable life long disease may be then you will get your answer. It is a shame that Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has more compassion than the fellow countrymen, speaks volumes for the state of nation!!!
Is polio the biggest problem Pakistan is suffering from?? Aren't corruption and bad governance bigger evil that needed to be eradicated in order to keep things run smoothly in Pakistan?
great news!
Well done Bill Gates. This is the way to go about getting a project see its completion. Now PTI's Imran Khan is in a tight corner. The compassion and magnanimity shown by the Melinda-Gates Foundation is truly remarkable. Salams
In my opinion Imran Khan should concentrate on good governess and development for the KPK and not those who are playing with the poor societies of the Globe for the causes which they are not connected with...
