KARACHI: Pakistan Army won the 35th National Velo Cup Boxing Championship after finishing with a tally of five gold and three silver medals, while PAF ended as runners-up. PAF won three titles out of a total of 10 finals played in Sialkot.

Meanwhile, Navy and Railway triumphed in the remaining two events, settling for one gold medal apiece.

International boxer Naimatullah of Army won in the middleweight (75kg) category, pipping Navy’s Dur Mohammad 13-9 after a close fight, while Mohammad Noman gave Army their second gold medal by thrashing Sindh’a Jahanzeb 21-12 in the light fly (49kg) bout.

In the +91kg final, Army’s Yasir Jawed eased to a 11-4 win against Navy’s Nadir Khan.

Army’s other triumphs came in the 81kg category as Riaz Ali delivered a heavy punch which forced Sindh’s Murtaza Baloch to retire in the first round. Ahmed too won in similar style as HEC’s Junaid Mushtaq retired in the first round during their 91kg final. Railway’s only medal came after a tie of scores between Mohammad Asif and Navy’s Mohammad Nisar in the 52kg fight as both pugilists had scores of 12-12. But Asif was declared the winner after the referee found him to be the better of the two.

“The referees found out, on average, Asif was better and had thrown more punches,” a Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) official told The Express Tribune.

On the other hand, Navy got their desired result when Sheraz defeated Army’s Sajjad Ali 19-9 in the 60kg contest. Naimatullah delivered the first win for PAF by winning his 56kg match against Army’s Farhan Mahmood 20-6, while Adnan Hasan won the 64kg competition against Balochistan’s Abdul Khaliq. Arshad Hussain wrapped up the third win for his side by triumphing 24-10 against Army’s Ikhlaq Ahmed in the 69kg fight.

PBF Secretary Akram Khan said that they had closely monitored the performance of each boxer in the event and they will be revealing the shortlisted pugilists to take part in the Asian Championship.

“We’re working on finalising the names of boxers which will be sent to the Asian Championship. The squad will be announced in a day or two,” said Akram.
