Clean energy: AJK devises plan to harvest solar power

MIRPUR: During one of the worst energy crisis in the country, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is set to achieve a major breakthrough in the solar energy sector, by executing a phase by phase implementation of a broad-based energy plan being prepared by the AJK government.

The integrated solar energy utilization plan, which is yet to be finalized, will increase the province’s share of electricity generated through renewable energy. The plan envisages various projects to utilize solar energy at district levels. Along with servicing major urban and rural centres, the increase in electricity production will also allow restoration of power to far flung areas.

The proposed plan will be launched with the cooperation of the federal government. The plan will help reduce the province’s dependence on local forests, which have been increasingly depleted for firewood in winters because of prolonged load-shedding.
