The elections for the assembly speaker and the deputy speaker were held on Thursday in Peshawar.
From PTI, Asad Qaiser had applied for the slot of speaker in competition with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal’s (JUI-F) Haji Munawwar Khan Advocate, while PML-N leader Arbab Akbar Hayat was contesting for the slot of deputy speaker against PTI’s Imtiaz Shahid. The rivals withdrew their candidatures.
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly commenced its first session on Wednesday where 122 newly elected members took oath.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) won the mandate in K-P in the elections and was set to form a government in an alliance with the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI).

Both ANP and PPP supported the candidates of PTI. This is what we call being gracious and accept the mandate of people. After your opponents are elected by the people they become leaders for next 5 years and the elections are over. That is how democratic parties act after elections.

Tell me one assembly in the history of Pakistan where the Deputy Speaker was from the opposition? Stop setting unrealistic expectations. Next you will be saying why dont you make the chief minister from opposition? Why are there ministers from the opposition?

@KJS: Not really. Its custom for the majority party or parties to occupy both the slots of speaker and deputy speaker. After all it is their government. Plus the opposition in the KPK assembly is not uniform; both PML-N and JUI-F have almost the same number of seats, as do the PPP and ANP. The issue of opposition leader too is yet to be resolved, however with Akram Durrani vacating his provincial seat to sit in the NA, it seems highly likely that the role will go to Mehtab Abbasi. Also, giving the slot of deputy speaker to either JUI-F, PML-N, ANP,etc. would be seen as a betrayal of party policy and would massively undermine the confidence in the coalition and the balancing of representation from different regions within the province. Another glaring issue would be the fact that parliamentary procedure would be seriously compromised if a party with different interests were to take up a role that could inhibit the majority's mandate to govern, hence, derailing the process of government altogether. And that could spell disaster for what can best be described as a freshman party at a very delicate juncture in our history.

That's not magnanimous of PTI leadership but rather narrow-minded. The Post of deputy speaker should go to opposition as per true spirit of inclusive democracy.
