Security arrangements for re-polling in 21 polling stations of the NA-46 Bara constituency were finalised in a high-level meeting held at Commissioner House, according to a handout issued on Tuesday.
The polling is scheduled for June 5, with 64,000 voters expected to cast their ballots under heightened security provisions.
In order to deal with any untoward situation, it was decided in the meeting – which was chaired by the commissioner of Peshawar – that additional security personnel from the Khyber Rifles would be deployed at polling stations along with Frontier Corps officials.
Meanwhile, the assistant political agent of Jamrud was appointed as the focal person responsible for monitoring security arrangements while the assistant political agent of Bara was appointed returning officer.
At the meeting, Peshawar Commissioner Sahibzada Anis also advised the political administration of Khyber Agency to call a meeting of all contesting candidates, and take them into confidence regarding the revised voter list.
The participants of the meeting included the regional election commissioner of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, political agent of Khyber Agency, commandant of the Khyber Rifles Landikotal, commandant of the Mehsud Scouts, assistant political agent of Bara and election commissioner of Khyber Agency.
Various independent and party candidates contesting the election from NA-46 had earlier asked the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold elections under the army’s supervision. Candidates rejected the May 11 results following widespread allegations of rigging and brawls between party activists outside some polling stations.
