Zaman was declared the winner on Election Day and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s candidate Omer Ayub the runner up. Ayub challenged the results, accusing election staff of mismanagement and rigging. He requested a recount which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) conducted on May 17.
Senior lawyers Javed Qureshi and Khalid Rehman Khan Qureshi have criticised the ECP for its decision to allow a recount. At final count for the re-poll, Zaman received 117,612 votes while Umar Ayub secured 116,308 votes making Zaman the winner by 1,304 votes.
