UPPER DIR:

Four police officials were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Charkom, Upper Dir.

A suspected militant was killed and a police official was injured in a search operation launched by security forces and police following the incident.

Upper Dir DPO Ihsanullah addressed journalists in Warhi, the district’s headquarters. According to the DPO, a police van on routine patrol was en-route to Sahibabad police station from Narhand Khawr when an IED, planted by unidentified militants, exploded near the vehicle. Four policemen sustained minor injuries as a result and were rushed to hospital.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Sahibabad SHO Fakhr-e-Alam explained as the police vehicle passed over a bridge, a huge explosion occurred. The device, which was detonated remotely, had been planted near one of the bridge’s poles. “The vehicle was damaged and the injured officials were discharged after being administering first aid.” Alam added bomb disposal squad officials reached the site after the incident and reported 10 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the homemade bomb.

Later, heavy contingents of police and security forces launched a search operation in the surrounding areas and blocked all routes.

According to an official of the security forces, two militants were spotted in the mountainous region of Gowaldai. When signaled to stop, however, the suspects opened fire, injuring  constable Ahmad Ali. Police and security forces returned fire in retaliation, killing one of the suspected militants. The other managed to escape. The injured constable and the militant’s body were taken to the Warhi Headquarters Hospital. “Though the identity of the deceased could not be ascertained, his physical features revealed he was a foreigner,” the official said. The search operation was still ongoing in the region till the filing of this report.
