PESHAWAR:

Students of schools run by the Afghan Consulate Peshawar asked for the transfer of the Afghan Consulate’s education director at the Peshawar Press Club on Saturday.

Led by Hafeezullah, the principal of the Muarrif School System, students carried placards and banners inscribed with slogans against Education Director Adbul Ghani Hidayat.

The Afghan Consulate runs schools in various locales including Hayatabad, Abdara Road and University Town under the umbrella of the Muarrif School System.

Thousands of Afghan students are registered in the Muarrif School System and are struggling to receive an education. Instead of coming up with a policy to provide quality education, the education director creates hurdles for students, alleged Hafeezullah.

“The education director is least interested in addressing problems faced by Afghan students in Peshawar,” Hafeezullah told journalists.

“Hidayat – through the use of his office – not only deliberately awards fewer marks to Afghan students in a bid to discourage them from continuing their education, he also penalises them when they take leave for a day or two.” According to the irate principal, Hidayat is “seldom found in his office”.

The Muarrif School System also faces issues pertaining to basic facilities such as potable water, electricity and school furniture, which Hafeezullah claimed Hidayat did not seem motivated to fix.
