The decision was taken after a meeting of the PTI Parliamentary Party chaired by Imran Khan in Lahore.
PTI also announced its candidates for the slot of Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly. Shahryar Afridi, the MNA-elect from Kohat, was nominated to contest for the Speaker while PTI’s Women Wing president Munaza Hasan was nominated for the slot of Deputy Speaker.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the party would play the role of a responsible, effective and vibrant opposition in the National Assembly. He added that the party has decided to field its candidates for all the parliamentary portfolios in the National Assembly.
The former foreign minister further said that PTI MNA-elect from Karachi, Dr Arif Alvi, will represent the Parliamentary Party of PTI. “Ghulam Sarwar Khan will represent the part in Business Advisory Committee of the National Assembly,” he maintained.
He said Imran Khan was in very good health and spirits, adding that he chaired the whole meeting in a very fresh mood. “He is doing fine, but if the first session of the National Assembly is convened on May 28 he will not attend it. As per his doctor’s advice, he will stay in Lahore for some time,” he maintained.
Imran Khan also thanked and appreciated PTI workers and supporters for participating in the protest at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Islamabad on Friday, Qureshi said. ECP should pay heed to PTI’s demands because they would be helpful in by-elections, local government elections and the next general elections, Qureshi added. He said the ECP had issued the notifications of the winning candidates and asked candidates with complaints filed against them those to go the Election Tribunal. “Our demand is that the number of election tribunals should be increased so that the decision of any case couldn’t take more than 120 days as described in the law.”
Qureshi said several parties had raised questions about the credibility of elections in Karachi, adding that PTI would keep unfolding its strategy about protests after the assembly session. “We have got our strong protest registered and will continue to devise our strategy about this from time to time.”
PTI’s central leadership, including Dr Arif Alvi and Shafqat Mahmood, were also present at the meeting.

@Four: It was not Imran Khan it was the Pakistan eleven a complete team. Kindly donot give all credit to IK. He just benifited from that win solely but the acheivement was by the entire team.
@KAY: We agree he is much sensible than IK himself.
@non political: What about if had a chance to become prime minister, would he still be nominating Hashmi, because he cannot attend NA session. Face the FACT bro!!!!
Well. Nawaz Sharif is going to be the prime minister anyway, so why this contest for the seat of PM? He should be appointed first and later should be required to take a vote of confidence to prove his majority in the parliament. In this case, PPP did the right thing by not contesting for the PM's slot!!!
offcourse there is no chance to elect PM of PTI , other wise IK never give chance to others PTI leader...Our leader IK zinda abd
@Aamer Khawaja: In India, the President invites the person who is backed by the majority to form the government. This person then becomes the PM. He / she may or may not have to prove the majority in the Lok Sabha. Thats it. No ballot.
Fat chance for all these candidates for sure. The imp point is when is PTI going to nominate a leader of opposition? If the EC continues with the results and keeps changing them, PTI might have a shot at leader of opposition. This is one fair election where results are never final weeks after the elections.
@Four: yes 2007 when students of jamate islami grabbed and gave him to police the same jamateislami who and pti are now coalition partners also during the long march of 2009 IK went into hiding to avoid arrest when nawaz sharif threw his detention and came out and the is history 1992 world cup was a team effort not only IK effort please mention the whole team while talking about 1992 world cup
@naem khan No, one is hiding. He won't be able to attend the first session. For god's sake the man fell from a 15ft stage. Imran Khan isn't one to run away. He snatched the 1992 world cup form the jaws of defeat. He spent time in jail in 2007 unlike Nawaz Sharif who was hiding behind his Saudi overlords.
@Four: by plane it takes less than an hour and being an inspiration to PTI trolls he can show some courage also he can stretcher while travelling come on khan inspire more don't hide behind your INJURIES AND JAVED HASHMI
Whereas PTI knows it very well that Nawaz Sharif shall be elected as next Pakistan's PM because PML-N does have simple 2/3 majority in the National Assembly and Javed Hashmi is never going to elected as PM.......
@Gp65: No. The speaker would've been someone like Shafqat Mehmood. And deputy speaker would have been Afridi. The candidates given are 2nd choice or covering candidates. Like Hasmi for Imran Khan; Afridi for Mehmood or someone else. And Munaza Hasan for Afridi and so on. Its like when the PML-N announced Mehtab Abbas as candidate for PM, intead of Chaudry Nisar, when Gillani was removed.
@naeem khan: Stop being this way, atleast use your mind. He can chair the meeting because its in Lahore where he currently already is. Unless you're offering to have the parliament building brought to Lahore instead of Islamabad so he can attend, please stop making comments without thinking.
@naeem khan If you had actually read the article you would have realized that Imran Khan is in Lahore. Last time I checked the national assembly was in Islamabad. That's a 4-5 hours journey which someone with broken bones shouldn't take. Next time please use common sense before commenting.
Hashmi Sahib wanted to contest the Presidential election against Zardari, but Nawaz did not let him, and that became one of the main causes of the rift between them. This time, Hashmi Sahib wanted to contest for the PM slot, Imran did not choose him, but he himself wanted to contest this. Many people are saying that Imran is selfish and knows that Hashmi will loose as PTI has less seats, so he is making Hasmi the sacrifice animal, but that's not the case.
The other option which PTI had was to support Nawaz as PM. If PTI would have chosen that option, in the short term they would have got better treatment from PMLN in running KPK, as they will be the leading federal Government, but at the cost of long term estrangement of voters of PTI.
So its a good move from PTI, and this means that PTI means business as opposition, they are not in the parliament to do the calculus of favours and patronage, and that's good news.
Kudos PTI.
Its very easy to blame Imran Khan without digging up into the issue. The reason why Imran Khan did not stand up for prime minister is because he is willing to stand up as the Leader of the Opposition. He could have asked any random elected PTI member of the assembly to stand against Nawaz Sharif since he already is claiming to be the prime minister, but since he has promised a vibrant National Assembly, the board has asked Javed Hashmi to stand up. This shows he and his party are taking every matter seriously.
@Np: UK opposition has complete shadow cabinet.
@Spoiled Brat: this is not an Insult
Hashmi is respected by all parties
May be IK is not well enough to do anything for months. Its different to attend your own party meeting than going to the NA as a crippled man. I hope he gets well soon.
@Rizwan: Opposition IS indeed essential. But that does not mean you nominate someone for the post of PM. Hat does not happen in any of the other parliamentary democracies be it UK or India.
A good decision.
@non political: Nowhere does it say that javed hashmi has been selected BECAUSE ik wont be able to attend, secondly attendance is not all compulsory, case in point- musharraf vs wajihudeen ahmed. Dont twist facts.
Kaptan, have courage, you contest rather than putting honest, dedicated person like Hasmi sb suffer defeat
@non political: he can chair "whole party meeting" but cannot attend the session where election takes place really a joke his presence will be required only for a few minutes he can go and relax in one of the chambers for parliamentarians really a lame excuse
In every democratic system of the world even when one party has clear majority there are other contenders/nominations for different posts including that of premiership. PMLN has got used to friendly opposition and their supporters are now asking why has PTI nominated someone instead of supporting NAWAZ. Well in every other democratic country including our neighbouring INDIA and including the Great Britain nobody is ever allowed to win without opposition. Winning and losing does not matter. It is about the theme of democracy. PTI or MQM supporters did not vote for their party so that they can go on and vote for NAWAZ in the parliament. Since PPP and PML N are part and parcel of the same boat they will support each other and will fool the masses in speeches and on media. Rest PMLN has the mandate and they will have their PM. InshaALLAH Pakistan will prosper and hopefully everyone will work for the betterment of Pakistan.
Lots of immature and funny messages by many.
People its politics not a club.
1- javed Hasmi because IK cant attend 2- why Hasmi, its great move as its old nawaz man and it would coz more pain to nawaz then anyone else in party can do. 3-opposition is essential part of democracy
Cool down guys..chill..this is between Javed Hashmi and PTI, what is your problem?? Take it easy..Javed Hashmi is much sensible than you giving comments for him.
Simply, the answer is given in the news. “He is doing fine, but if the first session of the National Assembly is convened on May 28 he will not attend it. As per his doctor’s advice, he will stay in Lahore for some time,”
If you are not attending the session then how can MNAs will elect you!!!!!
opposition for the sake of opposition, reminiscent of Chaudhry Nisar's unnecessary rants in the the national assembly for the last 5 years
This is total nonsense on the part of PTI leadership. They still talk fantasy, when will they learn the realities of politics ???
I feel sorry for Javed Hashmi. In PML(N) he would have any Ministry of his choice.
Two observations: 1) would the same person have been the nominee if PTI had 50 more seats? 2) the largest party should be invited to form the government which in this case Is PML-N. Why put up a nominee for post of PM. After all, while PTI. Has largest number of seats it did not have majority but PML-N made it clear that it. Would not try to collaborate with JUI and form a government in KPK- which could have led to horse trading. Why can Omran not show similar grace in accepting PML-N mandate in parliament?
@naeem khan: Hashmi nominated as Imran will not be able to attend some sessions of NA
read properly first
Looks like a bit of selfish move from IK. He should have faced it and lose it.
why not IMRANin 1993 NAWAZ SHARIF contested against BB knowing he did nt have enough numbers still he had the courage to lose IMRAN does nt have and those who are afraid of losing can never be winners
Watta joke, its an insult to Hashmi, IK is making a joke of this guy.....Would PTI have done the same if they had enough strength to elect the PM? ... NO
Hmmm... So old (N) Guy ..Legacy of PML-N
Would PTI have done the same if they had enough strength to elect the PM? Poor Hashmi :(
great selection of candidates 4 all slots.
According to another source, Hashmi has rejected the nomination. Could ET re-confirm? http://www.thenewstribe.com/2013/05/25/pti-javed-hashmi-refuses-to-contest-for-premiership/
