LAHORE: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) on Friday launched an operation against encroachments on 11 thoroughfares, recently declared as model roads.

A team consisting 25 officials of LDA’s Engineering, Enforcement, Town Planning and Estate Management wings partially demolished 12 signposts, 25 iron ladders and more than 350 extensions of shops at the Main Boulevard in Allama Iqbal Town.

The LDA team had identified around 600 encroachments on the road, of which around 300 were marked for Friday’s operation.

An LDA spokesperson told The Express Tribune that the operation against encroachments on the other model roads would be phased.

He said that the team briefed the traders about various violations of building bylaws in the design of their shops. Some traders, the official said, volunteered to remove these on their own.

He said that they were granted a grace period to undertake the task, adding that if they fail to do so, the LDA would resume the operation and demolish the structures.

The model roads include Wahdat Road (Muslim Town Mor to Multan Chungi), Main Boulevard of Allama Iqbal Town (Mor Bhekewal to Scheme Mor), Main Road of Samanabad (Mor Samanabad to New Mozang), Mian Boulevard of Gulshan-i-Ravi (Mor Samanabad to Bund Road), Maulana Shaukat Ali Road (Jinnah Hospital to PECO Road), Model Town Link Road, PECO Road (Kot Lakhpat to Ferozpur Road bridge), Main Boulevard of Johar Town (Shouq Chowk to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital), Abul Hassan Isphani Road (Kalma Chowk to Jinnah Hospital), Sabzazar Road and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road.

The LDA official said that the anti-encroachment drive was based on the findings of a comprehensive pictorial survey of nine model roads undertaken during Ramazan by the engineering wing officials in collaboration with a team of photographers and moviemakers.

The survey mapped commercial and residential buildings, traffic and other infrastructure.

The LDA has appointed Shahid Farid, the administration director, as the project director for Main Boulevard of Allama Iqbal Town, Mansoor Qadir, an additional director, as the project director for Main Boulevard of Johar Town, Sardar Akbar Nakai, the estate management (II) director, as the project director for Main Boulevard of Samanabad.
