
A cleric was gunned down by unidentified militants inside a mosque in Dargai, Malakand on Tuesday.
Noor Zada, a levies investigative official, said an elder identified as Subhullah had informed a levies official he heard gunshots while on his way to Spero Ghatoo Jumaat.
When he reached the mosque to wake up the cleric, Habibullah, for prayers, Subhullah found him dead.
Describing the crime scene, Zada said the mosque was located on a secluded stretch of land near a stream bank, adding it had no boundary walls. The locals had built a small room at one corner for the cleric to live in, said the official.
Habibullah’s body was shifted to Civil Hospital Dargai for an autopsy. Postmortem reports revealed he was shot multiple times at point-blank range with an assault rifle, the official added. Levies officials also recovered bullet shells from the scene.
Later, Khanzada, Habibullah’s father, took the body to Kot Najeebullah in Haripur district for burial. He told police his family did not have have disputes with anyone. A case against the unidentified assailants has been registered.
