Substandard drugs: PHC adjourns hearing of bail pleas till Friday

Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday adjourned the hearing of bail applications for health officials allegedly involved in the supply of substandard Hepatitis ‘C’ curing injections.


PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan adjourned the case till Friday while pre-arrest bail for former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) director general health services Muhammad Ali Chohan was extended.

On February 6, the court took suo motu notice over supply of sub-standard interferon vials worth Rs250 million to government-run hospitals and directed Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) to pursue the case.

ACE later arrested the then K-P director general (DG) Health Dr Muhammad Sharif, former project director Hepatitis ‘C’ control programme Ghulam Subhani and a storekeeper Mubarak Shah for alleged involvement in the scam. Chohan managed to obtain pre-arrest bail.

On May 9, the court issued arrest warrants against the owner of Pharmadic, a pharmaceutical company which allegedly manufactured the substandard interferon vials.
