While his father and two brothers are leading separatist movements in Balochistan, Nawabzada Jangayz Marri is vying for the chief ministership of that very province, and is determined to counter all efforts to separate it from Pakistan.
‘’For years, I have been defending Pakistan and its interests against all those who are trying to break it, said Jangayz, the elder son of the top separatist Baloch leader Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri . ‘’I will continue my campaign of defending this country,” he declared in an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune, while also saying that Balochistan is an integral part of Pakistan and it will always remain a part of the federation.
Jangayz, 53, has been elected to the Balochistan assembly as a nominee of the PML-N from his ancestral constituency of Kohlu, a place that has been the hub of fighting between Marri militants and the security forces. “I believe in parliamentary democracy as our political and economic issues can only be solved through the democratic process,” he declared with conviction.
His father Nawab Marri was once part of that very process, as a legislator in the national assembly in the early 1970’s. He turned to militancy after then Prime Minister Z.A Bhutto dismissed his party’s (the National Awami Party) government in Balochistan and launched a military operation against those who were protesting that act. Jangayz feels it is now time to turn back the clock.
‘’ I want all the militants to go back to their old ways and rejoin the democratic process for the betterment of the Baloch people and Balochistan ‘’ Jangayz said.
Nawab Marri is still leading his fighting tribesmen in Kohlu while two of his exiled sons, Nawabzada Hyrbyar Marri and Nawabzada Zumran Marri alias Mehran Marri are heading the proscribed militant outfits, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and United Baloch Army (UBA).One of his sons, Nawabzada Balach Marri, who was also one of the leaders of the BLA, was killed in Afghanistan.
‘’The so-called agenda of the independence of Balochistan is nothing but a ploy to add to the miseries of the Baloch people ‘’ Jangayz said while rejecting militancy. ‘’I fail to understand what kind of independence these militants are taking about,” he said, adding ‘’The Baloch people are already living in an independent state: Pakistan.
Jangayz criticized the militants for not having the “common sense” to understand that the fighting was adding to the miseries of the Baloch people, who he says have already suffered enough. “We are engaged in killing each other for petty political gains. In this discord and bloodshed we are not willing to recognize any one person as our unanimous leader, so what will be the fate of our people even if we get this so-called independence?” he asked, before answering his own question: ‘’Nothing but more and more destruction for the Baloch people. Enough is enough, let us now live and let live,” he said.
‘’I will talk to all militants for the restoration of peace and stability in the province,” he said while unveiling his plans for the solution of Balochistan issue. He cautions that it will not be an easy process, and will require a comprehensive strategy of dialogue and deterrence. ‘’ I had lengthy discussions with Marri fighters on their main grievances and found that over 90 percent of the people in the province only want a peaceful life and economic prosperity.”
‘’All the stake holders and state institutions need to address the main issues, which include the restoration of the government’s writ , ending militancy, job creation and good governance,” he urged, emphasising that all these issue must be addressed fairly and within constitutional bounds. And he clearly knows who the best man for the job is.
‘’Except for Nawaz Sharif, no national politician is sincerely interested in resolving the Balochistan issue,” says Jangayz who joined the PML -N in 1995. ‘’It is high time to initiate serious and sincere efforts to bring peace and tranquility in the province so that the poor and neglected Baloch people can also enjoy the fruits of democracy,” he concluded.

Funny how Indians pretend to be from Balochistan and make basic factually incorrect statements. Most Balochs do not want to separate from Pakistan. They just want equality. I live Pakistan and would love to live with brother Hazaras, Pashtuns and Sindhis. Punjabis need to change their attitude towards other people but that does not mean we want to separate. Sindh and Punjab combined have more Balochs than Balochistan. The trouble begins when Baloch youth protest for their rights and the over-cautious Pakistan military thinks we want independence. Most of us don't. This is something you will only realize when you are in Balochistan. Please do not listen to Indians pretending to be Balochs. Come to Balochistan and see for yourself. @JarriMarri - It is Baloch not Balochi. Now, pretend you are a Baloch and not Balochi.
United we stand divided we fall. There is much truth in this saying. Balouch is better off with Pak for that matter I feel Pak ( would have been ) better off with India. Khair jo beet gayee so baat gaye. Lets look forward and not divide the subcontinet further.
All parties and politicians of Balochistan, who are doing mainstream politics, are much appreciated. Nawabzada Changayz Marri can play instrumental role in talks with disgruntled Baluchi leadership by the support of PML-N federal government.
I appreciated Mr Jarri Marri what you have said .Why they forget " Balochistan was occupied "..? just passing every one their remarks what do they want to achieve ..? or might they having dream during the day light or maybe their family members are sub agent of "I S I" it seems to us what else we Baloch Nation expect from them nothing might they get killed very soon by the grace of God.
Baloch National Movement & Baloch National Front Just Need Freedom Of Balochestan. "You know wise man once said" Knowing once self knowing enemy and every battle certain victory knowing one self not knowing the enemy one victory and one lost but not knowing one self and not knowing the enemy and every battle certain defeat....! Nothing Perfect lasts Forever. Except in our memories.
A river runs through it........! Long Live Greater Balochistan .
@Baloch Fighter...Baluchistan is not an occupied land, its a province of Pakistan and after the 18th constitutional amendment all provinces enjoy a huge amount of autonomy. So Its upto u people to improve the ecenomy of your province. As for natural resources, govt of Pakistan invested heavily in setting u pthe infrastructure. In the 18th contitutional amenent all natural resources are 50-50. Thats fair because federal govt provides defence too. So basically my dear brother, u have already got wat u r fighting for.
@Humayun: no, it is changayz or changeyz but not with a J
Well, much has been told and said about the troubled situation of Balochistan , but nobody gave it the 2nd thought to understand the genuine narrative of Balochistan. The fact is that Balochistan is an occupied stated and will remain occupied untill a single Baloch is benifited though the state-sponsered tactics.Baloch has denied the forced occupation of this country. And it has been obivious through the election process recently passsed away. Do you know what was the electoral turn out in Balochistan?Let me tell that it was no more than 2%.. Baloch has boycotted all this because Baloch has got bulitte- riddled and drilled bodies of their loved ones... hopefully they won't hans down untill victory.
Changaiz Marri and Abdul Kudoos Bizenjo. Please correct the mistakes in two of your articles
Let hope for the best that tribal leaders/chiefs able to serve their people which seems will less happen (chief is not chief if he starts serving his subservient). For example massive efforts needed in education and health services ~ especially education will greatly improve their knowledge subsequently dismisses ignorance of people about the historic blame that someone else eats their resources. It’s a complex subject and Balochistan province needs waste reform in every sector to empower people instead empower chiefs.
The top problem in Balochistan is the Chieftains not the Punjab or the rest of Pakistan. Sardars looted the money given by the State to the development of the people of Balochistan and are now these Sardars are keeping alive a separatist moment to earn more money from the State by portraying an existential threat. If the money looted by these Sardars was spent on the welfare of Balochistan today the Balochistan would have been forefront of Pakistan.
Punch line : ’ I had lengthy discussions with Marri fighters on their main grievances and found that over 90 percent of the people in the province only want a peaceful life and economic prosperity.”
P.S. Is his name correctly spelled ?
We have been trying to find solution for years. How long should people of Balochistan wait? Our natural resources are sent to Punjab. will mr marri be able to stop it and divert it to balochistan first and make sure balochis enkoy electricity and power.
