“For me, Mustafa is everywhere, he never left us. Our 7-year-old daughter Rameen is proud of her father’s martyrdom,” says Sadia Mustafa, widow of Major Mustafa Sabir, who embraced martyrdom last week during clashes with militants in the Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency among other 23 military personnel. Rameen talks tirelessly about her father, and misses him badly, especially when she remembers how he would take her for ice cream.
Mustafa was associated with the 8 Punjab regiment while participating in a military operation in Khyber Agency’s Tirah Valley, which fell to the combined forces of the Tehrik-e-Taliban and the Lashkar-e-Islam. It is considered to be a crucial battlefield in Pakistan’s war against both foreign and local terrorists.
The wounds are still raw, but this brave woman dares to share her pain. “We are proud of his martyrdom; Allah granted him what he always prayed for. In accordance with Mustafa’s wish, I want to give my children a quality education so they can also serve their homeland just like their father.”
The valiant Mustafa who had served on key posts such as Siachen, South Waziristan and Swat, was born on September 19, 1978 in Faisalabad. He had joined Pakistan army in 1998 as a commissioned officer and was also part of United Nations peacekeeping mission for Congo.
Sadia said her husband was a brave soldier like his colleagues, adding that she calls up her husband’s unit officials on a daily basis to inquire about their well being.
A decisive operation has been launched against militants in the Tirah valley by Special Services Groups (SSG) forces along with regular troops, during which at least 23 troops have been killed along with local lashkar men. Scores of militants have also been killed.
According to statistics released by ISPR, around 2,400 personnel lost their lives and another 6,500 were wounded just in 2009-2010. In comparison, US/Nato forces in the region combined had a casualty figure of approximately 1,600. This shows the high price being paid by the Pakistani nation to eliminate terrorism. Sadly, it is a sacrifice that is rarely acknowledged and even in Pakistan, we rarely hear of the names behind the numbers.
One such name is of Captain Waseem -u- Din Razi. Just about a month ago, on the 5th of April, this brave son of Pakistan embraced martyrdom in the Tirah Valley.
Born 29 April 1987 in Karachi, Captain Waseem was a gutsy young commando of the SSG who, since his passing out, had participated in many furious military actions including the Swat operation.
As if guided by an inner intuition, Waseem this time paid a short visit to his ancestral home in Islamabad to seek permission for going for Jihad in the line of duty, before the last mission of his life. “It is binding upon us to seek permission from parents before proceeding for Jihad,” he had said. After acquiring that permission from his mother, he loudly said goodbye to all, briskly walked to the vehicle waiting outside his home, and never looked back.
He had promised his mother to call when he reached the operational area. When he did, his mother asked where he was. He replied, “I have reached the place where I was supposed to be”.
During the Swat operation, says his family, Waseem had moments where he questioned what he was doing: Is it okay to fight against our own brothers? He would wonder. But when he encountered the opponents on the ground, he found that the militants, who claimed to be fighting for Islam, were themselves violating Islamic injunctions. Waseem was disturbed at their brutality, their executions and hostage-taking and their acts of forcing young girls to marry them against their will. Since then, Capt Waseem Shaheed very devotedly started seeking inspiration from the guiding principles of religion, and had a clear understanding of the concepts of martyrdom and Jihad. He knew that this was his war, and in the valley of Tirah, he gave his life fighting it.

nation has proud on her brave soldiers who died for the security and safty of the mother land, it is our conviction they never die, they are the beloved of Allahsubhanhutala and they rest in the eternal abode.we the peoples of the Pak land pay their best tributes to our national heros and stood shoulder to shoulder with the bereaved families of these martyers.
Dear every one.
Aslam-o-Alikum. We should and have to appreciate our Army, who is fighting against terrorism which arrived in Pakistan because of USA. and contrarily USA is pushing us through drone attacks. Our political government should forcefully informed by any mean that Drone attacks should stop immediately. If USA is agreed, OK, if not agreed, we should mentally prepare for war with USA through Atomic Bomb. We have Bomb for what? USA ambassador should call to foreign office and inform him rudely, and give time of 24 hours, if they agreed, OK, other wise black list the Ambassador and kick out from the country. shut down the embassy immediately. All local employees should stop working for USA. Make the policy like this. So USA will apologies and will be on knees. The example is of Vietnam. Hope political government will take care of USA in this manner. Nawaz Sharif should address the nation and warn the USA, I can assure every body the total national will be with him. and you will see the terrorism will be vanished immediately. Come out of the war of USA.
Regards
May Allah rest their soul's in peace..Ameen We Love our Pakistan Army Heroes.
We owe you, the sons of soil.
We are proud of these martyrs and should continue their mission.
Salute to all these brave sons of the land.....
O martyrs of the great homeland. we are proud of your sacrifices.
Even if we forget them. Allah will remember their "Shahadah". For it is He, for whom they willingly gave their lives. Allah-u-Akbar!!!
The narrative about captain waseem is very important. It sums it all up. Some people are so insistent that i want to send them to the battle so that they can enjoy the hospitality of TTP 'mujahids'
A Shaheed never dies; he lives on but in another dimension. The Shaheeds of Pakistan can never be forgotten for if we forget those who give the ultimate sacrifice are forgotten, we are doomed.
Pakistan Army Zindabad !!
@hatespech: I am absolutely astonished by the sheer lack of your knowledge about things you plan on covering as a journalist. Perhaps 4 casualties occurred on one day and the rest were staggered during the operation. Its people like you who sow the seeds of confusion due to your own ignorance. Do a bit more homework instead of expecting all answers on a platter. Its not easy to get information about casualties during operations being conducted across a very large front.
Brave soldiers lay down their lives so that a nation can live in freedom and dignity. Our hearts go out to the Seven year old daughter of the martyred Major, and we whole heartedly commend his bravery and his ultimate sacrifice for his nation. Pakistan as a nation is fighting a war against homegrown insurgents who are diligently working on destabilizing the nation. We just witnessed an unprecedented turnout in the elections last week despite the terrorists repeated warnings. It was a strong message from a brave nation, to the threatening coward, that we will not let you force us into hiding. We look forward to continuing our partnership against our common enemies. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Pakistani friends in their quest for peace.
Abdul Quddus DET-United States Central Command
subhanAllah! may these gallant warriors always rest in peace.
"Many gave some; some gave all"
Such is the case of our brave men in uniform. May Allah bless Major Sabir and grant him and his fellow soldiers, who made the ultimate sacrifice, the highest abode paradise. Ameen
Pakistan Army Zindabad!
Brave men. you are the real hero.
mashallah may Allah bless the departed soul. pakistan need sons like you
Shaheed never dies; as they embrace sha-haadat for rest of the nation to live peacefully. I just want to say that these sacrifices are totally not repayable. The entire nation is Proud of our Shaheed and in debt of their Sha-haadat. This debt is only re-payable to bring a real change in our lives and country, and this change start with every individual effort. Lets decide that we will do the best for our nation and country by all the positive means.
thanks for familiarizing us with those heroes. in LA times a page is reserved for the US soldiers killed in afghanistan and iraq. may the pak army braves on the front be victorious. Aameen.
Maj Mustafa Sabir is my eldest brother and our family is proud that he offered his life for the country while fighting bravely. He completed his assigned task and was martyred in the battlefield by a sniper shot.
May his soul rest in peace and ALLAH elevate his position in Jannah Ameen....
I’ll wear your memory proudly, My beloved brother…my true friend. May my love for you reach Heaven above Until we meet again
It is sad that these sacrifices go unnoticed. They should be given more media attention. Our prayers are for them. Hope our generals learn that they should not meddle in politics and focus on protecting their jawans.
Thank you ET for printing this.
It is sad to see that death of 23 soldiers does not make who has given an ultimate sacrifice doesn't make it to front page but a fall of a political leader does. I wonder how people still come out and say that this is not our fight and want to negotiate with the terrorists.
No doubt, Its Jihad-e-Akbar. Shaheed hamaisha Zinda hota hai, but only the family can feel the space Martyr has left behind. Live long Pakistan.
Salute to freedom fighters in KP, down with pakistan occupation.
Why word Shaheed on coffin is in brackets? Is there any doubt?. Word Shaheed should be written in bold letters and before name.
Captain Waseem's brother and I studied in the same fashion school he was my junior, this guy was inspired by his hero brother I would see him in school dressing up like an army fashionista he would wear army camouflage pants rebellious shirts and bandanas.. this guy had an accident which made him deaf forever but this problem never became his weakness he's gem of a person and I am sure his brother was the same. Waqar is extremely proud of his brother he can put himself in the war if he's asked to just like his older brother. I was so impressed by this young guy as he stood strong in this heart wrenching situation when the body of the shaheed reached Karachi after 2 days of his martyrdom as Tirah Valley had become a ferocious battle ground also I was surprised to know that Captain Waseem wasn't called for the fight he belonged to some other regime which was off duty but he voluntarily joined Punjab regime for this specific fight maybe Allah chose him. Captain Waseem's family is proud today and so am I as a common citizen we should never forget sacrifices made by our real life heros be thankful to them for sheltering us they are truly the sons of this soil.
We need to go all out. I can't believe our Army just can't eliminate the talibans holed up in a town. How many more lives need to be lost before we just clean the mess.
I salute this brave Pakistani officer. When I look at the photograph or the circumstances, this might well be an Indian officer, who loses his life for the country. At the end of the day, what does it matter, whether Pakistani or Indian... War and terrorism are terrible things, and the soldiers who keep their countries peaceful are heroes.
When the heart of a soldier stops beating. The hearbeat of the nation should accelerate with the resolve that this blood was not shed in vain; Is it not shameful and disgraceful that we have leaders and judges and a sold electronic media that creates doubts about whose war this is?
wt eight regiment Punjab was doing in Tirah Valley? when i as a journalists calls security officials i was told that just four security personnel were killed in skirmishes, now wt? 23? why this lie....? despite this fact that i have a deep love for my land, and respect for forces,,,but why they are hiding facts from us? if they tell us that four officials were killed and we quote them and after a week found out that it was 24 out of 4 how can we rely on our forces? when these officials will breech this gap and starts trusting "civilians"?
Salute to Pakistan Army. May his soul rest in peace.
These brave men deserve our utmost respect. Through their sacrifice can we reap the benefits of freedom.
My heart really cries when an army jawan dies similarly my heart also cries when people in waziristan dies due to drone attacks. But the question is whose war are we fighting? The word "shaheed" is so confusing now a days that I sometimes don't know who really shaheed is the one killed due to drone strikes , the one killing the so called Taliban .. Even Indians when their fauji dies they labeled him shaheed.
Pakistan is in dire need of a political solution. All eyes on Nawaz and Imran. They must deliver.
This mind set of pride in death can never end wars. Talibaans think the same about giving life. What is the difference between both killings?
May his soul rest in peace. Rameen is a proud daughter of the Nation, May Allah fullfill all her little wishes. Pakistan Zindabad, PakArmy Payendabad.
Salmam to all the Shaheedan-e-Watan and salam to their families. It is an act not easy but demands a special quality and character seldom found.
But I wonder why Imran Khan says nothing against these enemies of our country, enemies of our armies, and enemies of Islam. I do wonder! Is it with these that IK hopes to negotiate with and bring peace? These are just dreams. Those who are cruelly brutal must not be sitting with any of us but brutally killed.
Brave soldiers of Pakistan Army....Allah will give you reward for your fights against this fitna. Pak Nation truely loves you from the bottom of their hearts. My heart weeps for our state and I also know only Pak army can protect us with the grace of ALLAH.
I owe my life to you all, More Love!
love u martyrs...the spirit and courage is priceless.
Great piece ET.
major mustafa was a nice soul n a g8 man. meeting him back in 97 when he joined our batch, his character n personality always remained forthcoming. being senior n being batch-mate having him aside was a g8 feeling. May Allah grace him with jannat n his family with strength to bear this irrepairable loss.....Ameen
This happens when u jump in in alien war both sides call themselves heros and martyrs. Such a waste of lives in this useless war on terror!
While Allah has blessed us with such brave soldiers who give their lives to protect the homeland, at the same time we also have politicians aiming to tear apart this country into smaller pieces for their small gains.
wow! I am so proud of our army regardless of whatever says! Almost cried while reading this article. May Allah bless these martyred souls with Jannah.
Inspirational. We need to highlight and praise our troops way more than we do currently.
Something atlast in the name of brave soldiers of the country... This is something which has been missing from newspapers and electronic media lately....Keep posting we would love to know about our brothers....
These brave soldiers are the only thing which stands between us and the barbarian hordes. My salute to their courage and sacrifices.
you rarely see a positive report on Army these days. RIP Brothers. Nation is proud of you.
Sacrifices laid by Pakistan armed forces will always be remembered, you deserve lots of respect & dignity. We should never criticize the whole institution due to wrong doings of few individuals & generals. RIP our brave soldiers who laid their life in the line of duty, nation is proud of you.
I'm 26 and Waseem was 2 months younger than I am. Really puts things in perspective.
We all will love you and our history will keep you alive... Our HERO!
Salute!
they are the real Heroes of Pakistan and I believe they will never let us down. Pakitan Army Zindabad
Salute.
I feel like I was born amongst great men, amongst giants like these brave soldiers, who gave their lives for a thankless nation. I feel a heavy burden on my shoulders, to prove to them, that they did not die in vain, that this nation has a heart still, not polluted by maulvis and mullahs who exploit Islam for their own benefits. Inshallah, I will try my best to make Pakistan a better place as much as I can.
and we want to negotiate with these people...sooner we learn that our society is getting radicalized the better.
Dear ET, You know I have often felt that we don't know enough about the valiant soldiers fighting for our well being in our country. They die largely unknown, their bravery and courage never given enough credit and as a Pakistani citizen I feel that we are very often made to forget them. I want to know the story of each and every son of this soil who has died protecting me. Thank you for this article, please keep letting us know about these sons of ours. And for the family of Major Mustafa Sabir and captain Waseem, we can never repay you for all you have done for us and our country. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. May God give you strength and may all your dreams in life come true. You are warriors. Thank you.
It is so sad that these men are simply not getting the recognition they deserve.
Yea this is totally not our fight..right guys ?
It's sad to see brave men die for their country and than their cause be dishonored ..RIP
Brave Sons of óur Soil........RIP
RIP....Freedom is not Free!!
Allah o Akbar These brave men will never be forgotten. These brave sons of soil.... Pakistan Zindabad
May his soul rest in peace. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. Pakistan Zindabad.
The soldier fights and the king is the hero.
