KARACHI:

President Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated the nation over the successful conduct of elections, marking the first step towards democratic transition in the country.

A spokesman for Bilawal House said that the president, while congratulating the nation, said that the holding of elections in accordance to the constitutional provisions was a triumph for the people, for democracy and of the system put in place for peaceful democratic transition.

The President also felicitated all national institutions and individuals who worked hard “to make possible the holding of this gigantic exercise so vital for the strengthening of democracy.”

“The people of Pakistan have spoken through the ballot,” the president further said.

He expressed hope that the next phase of democratic transition, which is the smooth transfer of power, will also be in accordance with the will of the people and the constitution, the spokesperson said.

As Ikhan thinks, there are many who think likewise. It is very difficult to precisely pinpoint the faults that are his and no one else's. Given the state of our nation, our country, our polotics, our people, our thinking, our geopolotical environment, our economy, and myriad problems, his performance shall be judged more accurately by history. Surely he could have performed much better, but then he could have also performed much worse. If his performance was not good enough, so was the performance of the nation as a whole, does anyone think honestly that both on an individual basis or on organisation basis outstandingly good examples are the norm and not the exception.

President Zardari ought to be congratulated by all parties for many good works he accomplished in the past five years in spite of a weak coalition that created more headaches than anything else; a judiciary that hounded his cabinet members stepping beyond its responsibilities; and one crisis situation following another through the five years... Altogether, interfered with day to day governance terribly. He took powers away from the Presidency, devolved financial powers to the provinces; was the first to name the terrorists for what they are, with the army's help having them pushed out of Swat; according to WB reports, the BB Income Support programme has been hugely successful for those living below the poverty line; during very difficult times in the region, his public statements were always correct. He has done much for the democratic system of Pakistan, lastly holding elections under dire terrorist threats to the PPP, and more without a complaint. Perhaps history will be kinder to him?
