MULTAN: Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPPP) senior vice president Yousaf Raza Gilani resigned from his senior party position on Monday.

"Someone needs to stand up and accept responsibility and I accept responsibility."

He made the announcement  during a press conference at Multan press club on Monday, two days after his party failed to get a substantive number of seats in the May 11 polls.

“I am surprised at the people of Pakistan who blamed PPP for every crisis,” Gilani said talking about the mandate of Pakistanis who did not re-elect the PPP government.

Confirming that his party will now spend the next five years on the opposition benches, Gilani ensured the PPP will play an effective role.

“I accept public’s decision and I understand that the public was angry about power outages and unstable economy but Why didn’t anyone ask Shahbaz Sharif about how many Watts had he contributed in energy production of the country?" he questioned.

“The kidnapping of my son is no way related to my resignation and I have no differences with the leadership of the party,” he said talking about kidnapping of his son Ali Haider Gilani on the eve of the elections.

Gilani was elected prime minister after the 2008 general elections and held the position till April 26, 2012.

Observing the pattern of voting it is visible that ethnicity has played its role fully.

PPP despite its failed/ worst governance has been able to retain its majority in Sindh ( highest number of seats in NA as well as provincial Assembly) PML (N) & PTI both could not dent in Sindh neither rural nor urban area.

PML(N) swept votes Punjab province in NA & Provincial assembly. However PTI did penetrate and won 7 NA seats there. PTI garnered majority in KP ( den of Pastuns) . One more term will teach the lessons( to public) to dis associate with ethnicity/ loyalty and the performance / better governance which will directly affect the masses( generation of employment/ better health services & education ) will be the criteria for winning. Politicians too must have understood ( from the plight of PPP) the importance to serve rather than pocketing the resources. If PTI is able to perform its role of effective opposition to check and balance the governance it will certainly will be be given a bigger role ( by the people of Pakistan) in the coming years in Parliament. One thing is sure, this process has and will strengthen the democracy.
