Section 144 also bans carrying weapons.
The imposition of the section means that Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) will not able to stage the protests scheduled in the city today against alleged rigging in elections. The protests were due to be held at Shahrah-e-Faisal and at Teen Talwar.
Another party also staged a sit-in earlier during the day at Sohrab Goth in Karachi against rigging, and blocked nearby roads in protest.

I think, we should respect the law. Traffic jam ko avoid kerna chahiyay, bohat pollution hoti hai.
Cross all the boundries to fight for the citizens right.
It the so called leader have become the dealers of Pakistan, we the citizen have full right to fight for our individual's right. If they can cross the boundries of laws and why can't a citizen fight for their rights. The rule of law should either be for all or for none.
Dont miss this opportunity. Fight till end. Dont let the power be transfered till justice is done. Dont let the illitrate and corrupted people take the power once more to loot the citizen.
The youthm the senior citizen, the tax payers, the industrialist, the captilists, the business communities should take all necessary step to provide justice.
Move ahead.
If MQM has support in Karachi they would NOT need to rig polls.
Their numbers thin every day because sensible people, peace loving people come to the right side and see reality.
Peacful protests demanding a re-election are against the law? and open threats to seperate Karachi from Pakistan are lawful? Shame on ECP and the present government.
This country will crash and burn to the ground before it has even the slightest hope of rising again. Watch as gradual decline snowball's into an uncontrollable landslide that will sweep away everything with it. Corrupt from the very roots all the way up; general elections are but a mockery of democracy in Pakistan. May Allah see us safely through trials that are yet to come.
The caretakers shakes hands with the namaloom afraad now ...great job sindh gov...
The British made lots of laws to control "the natives" which are still conveniently retained to rein in people when the govt doesn't like something. Something not right about this whole action. People must and will find other ways to protest.
WOW! So peaceful protests are against the law, but open threats aren't? Democracy truly is the best revenge..
Section 144 was also imposed on the day of election than why there were political workers inside the polling stations with weapons.
There you go. How could a revolution take place with no bloodshed.
@Jahanzaib Mr.Courageos you have got exactly 1 and half an hour to reach the dharna at SEFaisal.Get going .What are u waiting for ?
u r using state machinery for suppressing legitimate demands of innocent citizens. i am warning u, u r sparking a revolution now!
Times are changing. Sometimes * Grand Daddies* got afraid of Mummy Daddies.
Can someone tell me the extent of mqm support in karachi? Doesn't have of karachi support mqm? So how can you bring a "spring"? Please let me know
Section 144 of Cr.PC must say that people who carry weapons and are using them should be banned from protesting. Otherwise, there should be no such ban.
So this is democracy eh? What about the right to assemble and free speech - oh no democratic you say or only democratic as long as they favour the ruling party! So typical, first take away people's rights and then when they raise their voice crush them with the state apparatus. This is the true test of PTI's jaazba and junoon that Imran talked about all the time - this the ripening time for the party - all parties go through their battles this is PTIs and they have the chance to really make a change for good - for all those who might be braving the 144 all the best! If the Egyptians can do it, and the Tunisians, why not us Pakistanis.
Section 144 of Cr.PC must say that people who carry weapons and have used them earlier should be banned from protesting. Otherwise, there should be no such ban.
Where is our beloved, honorable cheif Justice. I guess the matter at hand is less important than traffice jams in Karachi for taking Suo moto Notice.
See how scared they are of us? If we continue this protest like they did in Egypt at Tahir Square.. They will be forced to listen to us.
@Middle class: You better look at the figures. Just take a look at the supporters. Will you still consider it as a PTI defeat?
The "mummy daddy" crowd is less than 1% of Karachi's population, and they will soon be washed out when the MQM launches the movement for a separate Mahajir homeland.
i think Mr. middle class you were on other planet on the election day
be there in groups of 3
These were the most peaceful protests I had seen. No Lootmaar, no damage to public property, no violence, no burning cars or tires...NOTHING of the sort. We have seen and come across worse protests where people have lost lives. the 144 doesnt get imposed then....why now?? clearly, the people are meant to have no voice or say in anything.
The dharna of ALL PARTIES is still on in karachi!! Be at share faisal at 630. Spread the word that the dharna is still on! Stand up for your rights karachi. IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN? IF NOT US THEN WHO!?!
@tsk, can you please explain what has ppp to do with all this? I guess many of the ppl r used to accusing zardari for every wrong doing, they will struggle for next 5 years to find a scapegoat
This is ridiculous .... How can you snatch the rights of people it's their democratic right to protest peacefully.
It seems like PTI members and supporters are still sleeping and dreaming because they don't have enough courage to accept the reality that they got defeated.
country where no body takes action when citizens die, but imposes section when people speaks & demand for justice and their right.
Revolution demands sacrifices, it’s ok if we need to challenge this system in order to change it.. people will not be threatened again by this cowardice driven act as Lincoln rightly said. “The sin of silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.”
Do not be deterred by this announcement. This ruling is unconstitutional in and of itself! These are higher powers fearing the awoken masses. You have every right to be there! It is time to show these crooks and criminals what a peaceful protest can mean! The fight for freedom from tyranny is a bumpy road, so treat this like a bump and come stand hand in hand with us and voice your opinion and your RIGHTS!
Government can't stop people from using their basic constitutional rights i.e. protest. This is highly unethical and the history will repeat itself.
@Sameer. Please no racist comments.
ET, don't stop comments First they rig, threaten people, hijack polls leader rants from London, threatens peaceful protesters Now section 144 is implemented
Utterly Disgraceful Karachi has spoken, and time has come to make a stand. We will not be intimidated. Karachi needs to unite for its liberties. RISE
Thanks God ! PTIers now please go back to your gaming consoles .
perhaps this is the beginning of pakistani spring?

Very good.now ECP has set up tribunals,14 ex-judges will head the investigation of alleged rigging.people of Karachi should go home now, there life's are not safe as criminal elements have been charged up and you don't want "MAY 13" after infamous "MAY 12"
Protests were not to be called of on the first place (the whole rhythm broke). Really sad response by the Government. There was no LEA around during the polls but now will see plenty of them to charge batons against the protestors.
P.S Dear Protestors be careful - Its all fun and games untill the na-maloom afrad guys show up. May Allah be with you
Ridiculous!!!
The administration and LEAs cannot do much about the law and order situation in Karachi but this peaceful protest is a serious threat to the mandate of NAMAALOOM afraad!
PTI will still hold the protest at the announced time and venues.... Sec144 cannot stop us from our constitutional right of protest against the rigging!
what shame. We have been hijacked again and can't even lodge our peaceful protests. shame.
There's a difference between Rule of Law & Rule by Law
this mendate is from the punjaBEEEZZZZZ for the punjaBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and it shoud be remain only for punjabiZZZZZZZZ
Tactics of He Who Must Not Be Named:
So first there is a threat of destabilization, then using state machinery to usurp democratic rights.
hhhmmmm, wonder where he gets it from.....
Frankly, bullies huffing and puffing and using heavy-handed tactics is great, as this reveals their real form to those who believe otherwise.
Politics of fear will not get you anywhere. Vote for change. Vote for the future.
Innocent ppl.. this country will never change!
This is a part of big game..innocent people of Karachi will not understand.....
How come NO ONE Imposed this section when MQM has their thrice aweek soogs How come when JI blocked the roads for their speeches ect this was not Imposed now ehn innocents want their RIGHTS all sections are rememebered
What crap is this. This country and especially Karachi has gone to the tyrant savages.
Protests were not to be called of on the first place (the whole rhythm broke). Really sad response by the Government. There was no LEA around during the polls but now will see plenty of them to charge batons against the protestors.
P.S. Dear Protestors be careful - Its all fun and games untill the na-maloom afrad guys show up. May Allah be with you
code of criminal procedure for innocent citizens asking for their basic rights.hats off to the custodians of karachi .
Back to the future..
One step forward, 500 steps back...
Same old faces, same old allegations of vote rigging, same tragedy for next 5 years...?
Now we have new participants of this drama. The caretaker government was also part of this.
the protesters should defy the bans. the police, which was helpless when the very same act, against which the protests are being done, was being carried out, should have no right to intervene now.
shame on ppp
Let see will the people of Karachi gone stand in-front of death or gone welcome death for 5 more years by step back.
Chances does not been given daily but once.. and this is the time!!
What!!! You are taking away my voice!! We forgot the cruel party we are trying to fight is in current power
this is getting ridiculous..where is SC and ECP
Mian sahab should also say something, he has the mandate now and everyone knows their was widespread rigging in karachi and altaf hussian's remarks were over the line !
Sensible decision.
