No luck, this time: PML-N breaks Cheema’s winning streak

Chaudhry Anwar Ali Cheema, a veteran politician who has been winning elections since 1985, ran out of luck this time. Contesting on PML-Q ticket, Cheema lost the 2013 elections to PML-N candidate Zulfikar Ali Bhatti.


Cheema had defeated his revivals from his home constituency of Sargodha by big margins in 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2002 and 2008.

In the 1985 non-party elections, Cheema defeated Afzal Khalid by securing 69,001 votes against 34,572 votes. He contested the 1988 elections for NA-50 (Sargodha-IIV) from the platform of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and defeated his rival Chaudhry Fakhar Javed Ghuman by securing 71,264 votes against 45,763.


Cheema contested the 1990 elections on IJI ticket and defeated his revival Riaz Amir, alias Abdul Haq. He bagged 77,073 votes against Amir’s 51,581. In 1993, Cheema contested on PML-N’s ticket and defeated Riaz Amir for a second time. Cheema received 69,360 votes while Amir bagged 66,039 votes.

In 1997, Cheema again won the NA seat on PML-N’s ticket by defeating Siraj Din Gujjar of PPP. Cheema bagged 73,825 votes against his rival’s 31,527.

In the 2002 elections, he contested from NA-67 on PML-Q’s ticket and defeated MMA candidate Shamas Naveed Cheema. He received 84,919 votes against his rival’s 38,136 votes.

Cheema contested the 2008 elections from NA-67 on PML-Q’s ticket and defeated PPP’s Dr Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti. He polled 83,594 votes against his rival’s 66,393 votes.
