Nawaz Sharif waves to supporters as he heads off to vote at NA-119 on Saturday morning.

Supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) took to the streets in celebration last night as the party appeared set to win around 115 National Assembly seats, making it the clear victor in the general elections.

Youngsters on motorbikes waving PML-N flags began pouring into the streets shortly after Nawaz Sharif, who looks set to become prime minister for a third time, delivered a short speech in Model Town.  Dozens of party supporters gathered at the PML-N Central Secretariat in Model Town and chanted “Sher, sher” and “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif”. “We’ve worked hard for this and now our hard work has paid off,” said a PML-N worker riding a motorcycle. “This is the time to celebrate and express our joy.” Another PML-N supporter said that more celebrations would follow on Sunday, once all the results were in. “There will be proper celebrations once the complete results are announced. This is a great day for democracy as for the first time, one democratically-elected government will take over from another democratically-elected government. We should all enjoy it,” he said.
