She maintains her signature poise, and she is not a novice in the field of politics, but the 2013 election season is phenomenally different from the previous one in 2008 and she knows it.
In Karachi, Khushbakht Shujaat of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is on a re-election bid for a National Assembly seat. “Five years ago, we did not worry even once about stepping outside for the campaign,” Shujaat, who secured around 52,000 votes to win the NA-250 general seat in 2008, said. “I’m putting my life at stake for the election campaign willingly but my heart goes out to the public whose lives have been put at risk by the security threats.”
NA 250 is termed the “Hot Seat” of Karachi, with 32 contestants vying for it, and Shujaat up against the likes of Jamaat-e Islami’s Naimatullah Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf’s Arif Alvi, who are being billed as her main rivals. But while Shujaat said every candidate in the field is a worthy competitor, she seemed hopeful that MQM will retain the seat.
Election campaigns are to tell people our past achievements and to listen to their demands, but the violence has altered the focus of the campaign, according to her.
“People are not willing to step outside their homes because of fear, so the campaigns have been reduced to motivating them to visit polling stations and vote on Election Day,” Shujaat said.
She is confident, however, that MQM’s traditional vote bank is intact and that committed supporters of the party have only grown stronger in the wake of threats from the Taliban.
With its posh residential areas and urban slums, Shujaat said NA-250 is a diverse constituency. She claimed she helped resolve municipal problems in the area during her previous term - responsibilities which she said fall on the MNA’s shoulders in the absence of a local government structure.
Even before she became a member of the National Assembly in 2008, Shujaat was a well-known public figure because of television appearances.
She said she has always had a link with the people, first through the media and later, as an educationist. When MQM’s chief Altaf Hussain provided her a political platform, she decided to get political training from the party as a worker instead of a nomination on the reserved seats for women. “I did not want people to think I am an opportunist,” she said. “I wanted to contest the elections on merit.”

And you think that is MQM or any govts. doing , son you live in a cantt area and its the army incharge take it up them and see how it goes@tim:
How long will people keep voting for MQM?
MQM has been getting Karachi's votes for decades now. If you are satisfied by the state of the country and MQM's contribution towards it, then keep voting for MQM. But if you want a change, continuing to vote for MQM does not seem logical. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results was defined as insanity by Einstein.
@zahid Assuming your 6% and 94% numbers after the best electoral performance by MQM, don't you think people of Karachi should pick a party with more potential impact?
@Mr. Ahmed: aysha has very solid points in favour of MQM , why dont you bring 10 strong arguments in support of PTI , it is national assembly election and not some gave where a child says mein haein maanta
@ NA-250 Voter
Are you conveniently turning a blind eye to the blatant fact that PTI & MQM are in alliance on more than 3 seats? PTI & Imran Khan are no more the opposite of MQM since 2010. They are one & the same!!!
How many words has Imran Khan uttered against MQM during the last 2 years? Nil ;)
Muk MukkaMy family lives in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. All my family members will be Arslan Ghumman of PTI.
@Aysha: Calm down miss. It's not as if the election will be won based on your comments. For example, my choice is PTI, and nothing you can possibly say will change that.
27 members of my family and extended family will be voting for the lady. MQM will retain this seat!
@zahid: If I go like your mind set then Khushakht Shujaat is good enough as a teacher not a MNA. About Musharaf read the 2007 Wiki leak report where he ranked second after Putin the most corrupt official in the world. You may think Karachi is a city. But what type of city. Could we compare any city of Pakistan with developed cities like Dubai, Vancouver, Hong kong, Toronto, Calgary, London, Singapore and so on. Answer is big NO. Next could we be able to develop such cities in Pakistan in next twenty years if we keep working with our past mind set? Ask yourself and you may find answer NO we be not able to develop such type of city. For QMQ I just suggest read the speech of George-galloway in UK parliament about MQM. Anyway, I don't want to indulge myself in un-necessary arguments. Well, I close the comments with the following notes Cheer up sad heart and sees ripening Behind the clouds sun is still shinning Country is developed by vision and working hard to achieve the vision. Regretfully, after Muhammed Ali Jinnah Pakistan didn’t get any visionary leader. The mess we have now is due our 64 years bad selection in elections. It seems to me whole nation has to re-start again with zero. Accepting our mistakes and bad decisions and asking ALLAH’s forgiveness.
@Aster: this space is meant for people to share mature observations, not to make baseless comments, use of reason and logic is encouraged by ET
Let's vote for Jibran Nasir on this seat instead of all these tried and tested people who have failed us time after time. He truly makes more sense than everyone even PTI.
It will be really sad if karachites do not rise above ethnicity! MQM has not delivered in the many years they have been in power. Really hope see the Karachi that it was in early 80s.
No sane man can vote for MQM. We know what MQM has given to Karachi in their rule of 14 years since 1999.
MQM will not lose by some random comments from different parts of the world. Inshallah it will win because the majority of a NA250 will vote for this fine lady.
Will vote MQM all the way.
@Aysha: i so much agree with you
@Karachiwala: @Aamir: how about deviating into sense for a change, and see what the party has offered in the past 30 years, its contribution at local and national level.
This lot provided a model in Pakistan that was completely unheard of when Pakistani politics was completely in the grips of the feudals and landlords and industrialists.
Please committ yourselves to analysis and see which party has really evolved over the years after going through the rigor of election process and which party understands the dynamic of our dear metropolis, dont be blinded by prejudice and think before casting your vote, and vote for the party which is mature enough to handle the city, there is no time to experiment with Karachi and leave it to the mercy of naive political players, not Karachi, they may have better candidates in the Punjab, I wish PTI the very best in Punjab. Karachi is beyond their political credentials. So think and vote, please. Rise and rise to reason
@Aysha: wonderful reasons to vote for MQM , only if we Pakistanis shed our prejudices and think rationally , i would also like some one supporting PTI with some solid and factual reasons to support PTI
@Aamir: whats happeneing use ur grey matter , a party which cannot organize a jalsa , is given preference over a party which has a proven track record , it would have been great had imran thought to some electoral adjustment , if u are voting outside karachi PTI is good optionagainst rotten stuff of yore , where as in karachi Mustafa
s party is the best option they pproved during 2002 till 2008 when given some control who doesn
t know that MQM , ministers have very little say in administration . look at the way tey organise their party , this is the only gauge to assess , over here in the west party organization is the bsis for people to trust them with the country . Had pakistan was prejudice free Mustafa could have been next Prime Minister , we talkso much about Turkey and Iran if u are aware both leaders first were mayors of mega cities of istanbul and tehran , here in london current mayor boris jhonson is seen to be next party leader of conservatives for the prime ministreal seat. It is simple all mega cities actully are mini form of the country , as karachi is always called mini PAKISTAN ,and it has been proven beyond doubt how successful was Mstafa . he should have been front runner for the big seat as it is MQM , is blessed with a arty leader who does not aspire public office , my dear grey matter it is grey matter which is needed.@Jasper: ET is doing an amazing job, by providing this platform to exchange political observations without being needlessly tangled.
So Naah, could be explianed using this space
Tessori of PMLF pulls out of NA 250 in favor of JI, so Naimatullah has won. congratulations to Pakistanis. PTI you now don't waste votes against Naimatullah.
@Aysha: Naah.
Vote PTI :)
WILL VOTE FOR MQM, because of the following;
1.party leader never contested elections or aspired to hold a public office, so truly a genuine leader (needless to say leads a humble ordinary man’s life, can often be seen in TESCO T shirts instead of Versace suits, adorned by some (e.g former PM Gilani)
no dynastic politics
no relatives given party tickets (instead brother and nephew martyred)
no attempt made to fill personal coffers
MNAs and MPAs, educated and intelligent people none of them with fake degrees
6.MNAs and MPAs do not become rich over night, some even live in rented houses
zero tolerance for corruption or nepotism in MQM
MNAs and MPAs stay in touch with people of their constituency and constituents
MQM promotes ethnic and religious harmony (e.g. MPA Reza’s and his bodyguards funeral prayers led by sunni and shia clerics and all followed in their immat, unprecedented event in tainted history of religious discord between shia and sunni in Karachi)
Raising voice for the oppressed (e.g. openly condemning persecution of shias and Ahmedis)
Produced shadow budget for the first time ever in the legislative history of Pakistan
Land reforms bill and de-weaponization bill
Mustafa Kamal phenomenon/model, Pakistan had never seen such enthusiasm and dynamism in a public representative ever before
Distribution of support in disaster area in the length and breadth of Pakistan regardless of ethnicity and religious belonging
and above everything presenting a model to Pakistani politics that middle and lower middle class people can make it to parliament houses, which were largely meant for fuedals, wadras and industrialists
@Altaf: PTI is actually MQM's efforts reaching fruition. Had there been no model set by MQM of middle class people going to the parliaments, there would have been no PTI and feudals would still be reigning and plundering, not that they are completely gone, but they are definitely treading with caution in the presence of a force like MQM
Well, the thing is ONLY MQM can do for Karachi, none is acceptable here. We have seen PPP tenure, PML N tenure, and PTI's mind set will not be different from them. Trust me those who are saying that they will vote for some other party then MQM they are just not the WELL WISHERS of Karachi. If you want a peaceful and developed Karachi, just vote for MQM
Today I have made 30people to vote for MQM....
Request to all the supporters try your best to change people mind! Show them the ground reality.. ppl r just falling for the FALSE DREAMS
@zahid: relevant quesion any PTIs to answer
@Aamir: it isnt funny like it or not MQM is the best option
@Mohammad Ali Siddiqui: If that would be the result then I should say PTI is only approaching towards rich and porch areas of karachi because they had a chance of freedom for rallies and public meetings in karachi under TTP umbrella and they have decided to target only clifton defence. Why we didnt see any PTI activity in gulshan lyari johar north karachi etc.
@mrs ahmed: as Atheist. apolitical, I wish your Baji Ji Win.
My class fellow in Karachi, has made best GARLANDS, he wishes to DECORATE each Party Leader, with his GAARLAANDS ( HAAR)
@tim: "My entire family and domestic 2orkers registered in na250 are voting pti" sir You can vote anyone you please, but forcing your unfortunates DOMESTIC WORKERS" to fell in the same well where you plan to jump, is not DEMOCRACY.
@mrs ahmed: You're welcome.
Vote PTI :)
@Aamir: thanks for realising the reality
Last time she won, though Ikhtair Baig was optimistic that he would be winning from the platform of PPP.
But this time the situation is different. From my calculations, the results of NA-250 would be as follows:
PTI MQM JI Any other party. Therefore the winner of NA-250 constituency will be PTI candidate.
My vote is for Khusbakht Shujat and MQM all the way. They represent the people.
@Shahid Iqbal: For points 1 & 3:I would recommend him for a PCB chairman. For point 4: I think about the person we are writing here on this article is at her best in communication especially in your mother tongue. for point 5: I don't think it was justice to say we have tried MQM among these major parties. They had a stake of merely 6% and it wont be justice if u accountable them for 94%. Just read the various economic comparisons and progress in era of Mr. Musharraf and development in karachi at that era.
when your leader don't trust your party when it was in power than how can we trust your party to protect the innocent lives. ask your leader to come over to Pakistan before the election.
@shah: Agree Bro … No one can damage mqm vote. Very true...they do not need anyone to damage their vote... their own performance in last twenty years of power is sufficient enough for people to look for alternative.
May Allah bless Imran Khan with full recovery , pleae give a thougt to mismanagement , it could have been easily everted if some rails were also around the platform , after 17 years of hard work , there is no organisation , sorry no training given by Khan . on the other hand had people ever thought how well managed MQM events are , is there any event by MQM where food is being looted go on do research all parties i.e PPP, PLMn PTI , where food is treated terribly .Not even ramadhan is respected , always hugenumber of people on stage , where as in MQM , they have organised number of ppeople who are on stage u see importance in party is not gauged by how near u r sitting to the party leader , actually it is behind the scene work that is important. MQM is the only party which can match in its organisation with parties of western democracy , therefore no worries for me INSHALLAH baji will win
MQM is in power from more than a decade. everyday we witness killings of families, why your governor is not resigning when he is in power for than a decade. MQM was also in power for more than a decade. who is responsible for all the innocent lives and being a Karachiate I know how your party was coming into powers. speak for a change tired of old ruling parties
great to see so many posts endorsing PTI.......Tsunami in Karachi! finally the nation was woken up...those words which Khan used to say on talkshows a few yrs ago "one day, this nation will rise up and stand beside me....i will not end my struggle, no matter what"....this is nothing short of a miracle what is happening today. GO PAKISTAN GO! get your Khan in at the top slot, and help him transform Pakistan into what we have always dreamed of
My request to all NA-250 residents here who are not voting for MQM... Please don't waste your vote by giving it to JI or independents... Vote for the most promising opponent to MQM... Vote for PTI. Spread the word.
MQM ALWAYS ROCKS!!! with super educated candidates in one of the most educated city in Pakistan!! THEY WILL WIN AGAIN!! ALL VOTES OF PEOPLE THOSE WHO ADMIRE MUSTAFA KAMAL THEY WILL VOTE FOR MQM! PERIOD. NO NEW THEORY ONLY PRACTICALSIM! and vote for local bodies a true spirit of democracy!
Most of my family was voting MQM before they are all PTI now. Be on the right side of history people
@bilal: MQM got chance in Musharraf era they proved to be much competent to deliver and they made ONE OF THE FASTEST DEVELOPED CITY OF KARACHI IN THE WORLD!.....MANY THANKS TO THE MUSTAFA KAMAL AND VISION OF ALTAF HUSSAIN! THE TRUE KARACHITTES! all 12 votes of my family will be going for Khusbakht Shujaat and she will win again Inshallah. Salam!
Khushbakht just capitalized on her seat last time and did not do anything for the locality. I am voting for Jibran Nasir an independent candidate standing from NA 250 & PS 113
@shah: in case your vote is already casted at your polling station, go to the presiding officer and show your CNIC and your thumb to indicate you have not voted yet. you will be issued a fresh ballot paper which will be inserted into a sealed envelop which will be inserted into the ballot box. the vote in this envelope will over ride any other vote. a note will be made of this error. Pakistan has taken a u turn against all the culprits. please forward this information to all your friends and family members. no more cheating in the establishment of Naya Pakistan
Go back home, it's only PTI, ma'am, only PTI.
WIll vote for PTI. MQM has destroyed Karachi
My sister and I would've voted from NA-250 (we're registered), but we're both overseas. But my three other family members and domestic help will all vote for Arif Alvi...indirectly for IK. I recommend that people refrain from voting for Naimatullah...because dividing Alvi's vote bank won't help Naimatullah, but it can help PPP and MQM win... Please vote only bat this time! Khushbakht Shujaat didn't do anything for you (with all respect), so please try and give IK a chance as PM. Don't divide the vote bank!
I tell you why every one should VOTE for Naimatullah. Iam telling with reference to the wikipedia and you can find references there too. Following are the MEGA projects completed by Naimatullah which even Federal Govt never did. Please read below:
During his tenure Naimatullah oversaw the Taameer-e-Karachi program aimed at improving the infrastructure of Karachi. He achieved over the years of his tenure to increase the budget of Karachi from 6 billion rupees to 43 billion rupees. He passed various projects such as 18 flyovers, six underpasses, two signal free roads and a huge water supply scheme for the people of Karachi. It was the first time in the history of Karachi that all the stake holders were incorporated for the developmental works. He was also the person behind the project which built dozens of Model Town Parks in Karachi. Many of his projects were completed in the tenure of the next mayor. For his tremendous work he was shortlisted for the World Mayor of the Year but due to local body election rules he had to resign just before his tenure ended which meant he could no longer compete for the title. Most importantly he is one of the very few people in the history of Pakistan to hold such an important and prestigious office and still remain free of any corruption charges. Even his opponents laud him for this. He deserves victory based on his brilliant past record. He really served Karachi and Pakistan. Pakistan needs him more than ever.
@Nauman: u cant against the law to convinve people on voting day ,
Naimatullah will cannibalize PTI. Benefit will pass on to MQM and PPP, PPP doesn't have stronger vote bank in NA 250 thus MQM will get the seat.
JI`s Naimatullah will probably take the seat, as he is the most respected person among all others in the constituency.
4 Votes from my house go to PTI for MNA (NA 250) and MPA (PS 113)
I'll encourage more new people on D-Day!
@tim: "I believe that it will be Ji and mqm cutting into each others vote banks." this show your awareness about Karachi politics. feel pity for u.
@Tabish Bilgrami: Agree Bro ... No one can damage mqm vote.
PTI is seriously paving its ways to succes and at the same time it's suppressing the monopoly of other political parties in their strong-hold-areas. If all these ex-ministers had done their work honestly they wouldn't have been worried for losing the seats in the upcoming elections.. Anways PTI has already won in that way..!
@zahid: Assalamoalaykum, Country is developed by vision and working hard to achieve the vision. The mess we have created in past 64 years by our bad selection and bad government decisions require whole nation to re-start again with zero. Accepting our mistakes and bad decision and asking ALLAH forgiveness. PTI deserve to be voted. If someone compare the profile of Imran Khan with other political parties leaders of Pakistan then we will find that Imran Khan profile is far better than others. 1. For example, Imran leads a team of diversified professionals and with the donation of people he successfully completed Shaukat khanum cancer hospital which is in operation since Dec. 1994. 2. He established university in Mianwali which is not an ordinary work. 3. He was Captain of Pakistan cricket team and under his leadership Pakistan cricket team won the world cup in early 90s. This is also a big achievement. 4. He is an Oxford University graduate and his communication skills are quite good. 5. Last but not the least we tried PPP, PML-N, MQM, ANP and also Pakistan army generals-four times in past and nothing work out. So it is better to close the non-work out chapters and begin a new chapter with Imran khan. I close my comments with supplication to ALLAH ALMIGHTY to grant success to PTI in upcoming election. ALLAH help and guide Imran Khan and his PTI team to lead Pakistan in good direction. Amen.
Thank you Shahid Iqbal
Khushbakht main rival on this seat is Arif Alavi of PTI and he seems to be getting the support of PPP voters too who have now switched their loyalties to PTI.Not easy for MQM to retain this seat this time it looks.
I am from NA-250, and my family and I will be voting for Dr. Arif Alvi.
Also, most people who will vote for pti will be new voters like my 85yr old grandmother who will be voting for the first time since 1977. I believe that it will be Ji and mqm cutting into each others vote banks. 50,000 votes (possibly rigged) is nothing to write about when there are 365000 registered voters in the constituency.
I am sick and tired of public property parking spaces leased out to people who charge ludirious money for a few minutes of parking.
even last time she won because MQM supporters thronged voting centers and stopped opponents from voting in addition to creating other issues- if Army is deployed the way it is suggested, I am very sure she will not return like many other MQM candidates.
“People are not willing to step outside their homes because of fear, so the campaigns have been reduced to motivating them to visit polling stations and vote on Election Day”
No matter how much you try to convince us to stay at home, we will come out (come what may) and show you the power of youth. Each one of us will come out and vote for PTI. Remember what the captain said last time, vote for the party, not for the inviduals (in each constituency).
Get ready NA-250 youth, we want to see Pakistan prosper.
@bilal: my friend karachi's dynamics are not the same as any other cities in pakistan, first it needs to be clear in your mind. Its a city of holding a population of 20 million. People came here to earn money as they don't have that much opportunities in their own cities . But not every one got the legitimate chance to earn the same as this city has also got its capacity. So what happened to those, have you ever think about it, where they have gone!! Actually, these people are real missing persons. No body bothers to know about them that how they are feeding themselves and their families. Do you think how many of them went back with empty hands to their respective places.
Only PTI this time. Only PTI.
My entire family and domestic 2orkers registered in na250 are voting pti.
A role model for many persons..it was not her responsibility to resolve the municipal issues in her constituency but her responsibility was to restore local body system in order to fulfill this gap. I think MQM felt that responsibility very well as their stakes are very high in Karachi and they proved it in the past. As a matter of fact they did their utmost to convince the same to the ruling party but they betrayed them by using their Sindh card. But is it fair to give them the responsibility or representation of merely 6% and stand accountable for 94%. I am not here to convince you to vote her but at least a chance to think before vote.
This time around from NA 250 I.A its PTI folks...! :)
She has not done anything at all and expects to be re-elected. The problems remain where they are.
Naimatullah Khan and Arif Alvi will cut each other's vote, leading to a victory for Khushbakht Shujaat :)
on an average more then 10 innocent people are killed in Karachi. do you still think we will elect you so that the scale jumps to 20. never to you and to your party. speak for a change
I am registered voter at NA 250.....INSHAA ALLAH will vote for Arif Alvi along with my family and friends
She didn't even have to go out once in 2008 to ask for votes because the elections were rigged to the core.
What have you done to deserve a re-election? Sorry im not voting for you this time around!
