All political parties want us to believe that they hold the struggle of our soldiers and their martyrdom in high esteem; some of them lie. Mr Imran Khan believes that the TTP are only Pashtuns and Tribals who are just annoyed because of America’s war, etc and all will be well once the “New Pakistan” is put in place. How condescending, how ignorant, how sinister it is of Mr Khan to say that. How hypocritical, how deceitful is it to then pretend to honour the martyrdom of our soldiers and civilians killed by the TTP in the same breath, or even in the same life. And it is not about some silly game of who has been to the tribal areas how many times; it is about minimum knowledge, sense and courage. In any event, there are also some other people who may know a thing or two about Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal areas, the ANP for example. Mr Khan is not too concerned with dignity at all. Mr Khan “requested” those who are venting their anger by bombing political rallies and murdering kids to wait for a few days, the New Pakistan is just around the corner. One is supposed to be careful in the employment of adjectives for national leaders; however, national leaders are also supposed to be careful about what they say. And when they speak dangerous nonsense, it should be called out as such. He felt the need to offer a clarification on behalf of the TTP and state that these faithful brothers of ours had no role in BB’s martyrdom. Mr Khan has made a habit of saying ridiculous things about things that he has no clue. The only real clarity that he has displayed in recent times is in firmly stating that he will not amend the clauses in the Constitution that declare the “Ahmadis” infidels and doesn’t want their vote. To be fair, no one can speak of amending them right now, but then to be fair, not everyone is promising a new country.
There are other parties who also hold similar views on the TTP and the “war on terror”. It does not matter; people have already made their respective choices and will go along with them. By all means do and vote for whoever floats your boat. However, show your face when a four-your-old kid is murdered in Karachi because his father (who by the way was also killed) was contesting the election from a particular political party. Some punishment for “corruption” for the kid; is it not, serves him right for being born into a family which had affiliations with a corrupt party or maybe the kid had not done enough in his total of four years to tackle the law and order situation and had it coming. Maybe the kid deserved it since he did not stand up when others (mind you who were coincidentally almost always from his family) were being targeted etc. And this mix of cold blooded apathy and downright cruel ignorance is not to be mentioned because it hurts the fragile sentiments of some hypersensitive followers of popular national leaders. If these followers are “mature” enough to be unmoved by the killing of children, they should be able to handle their leaders being described (accurately in my view) as being pro-violence. Also, any talk of being sensitive is a bit rich coming from people who casually trample over the memories of martyrs.
There are these lines of Kipling that make themselves useful in Pakistan with some frequency. “Our statecraft, our learning, Delivered them bound to the pit and alive to the burning, Whither they mirthfully hastened as jostling for honour. Not since her birth has our Earth seen such worth loosed upon her … But who shall return us our children?” Our children are being delivered to the pit, and there is no statecraft and learning behind it. There is cowardice and opportunism.
It is campaign season in Punjab, and the funeral season in the “other” Pakistan. Realpolitik and electioneering is an excuse for a lot of things; silence or condoning murder is not amongst those. Punjab is the “New Pakistan”. It is not all of Punjab either; it is only the right kind of Punjab. The urban, educated (in the basic formal sense) and the politically aware, because you know the really unwashed, poor peasants etc. have a tendency to vote for the “corrupt” parties. Well, the TTP is working overtime to remedy that by not allowing them to campaign. Heartwarming stuff it is to see friends in need being friends indeed.
Coming back to General Kayani’s statement, it seems that the new country is destined to get off to a confused start. While the army leadership is rightly commenting on the true nature of the challenge, there is a distinct possibility that we might have a political regime that will be unwilling to put up a fight. That might be an understatement; we might have a political government who yearns for the reconciliatory embrace over dead bodies. The entire consensus circus is bound to happen again. This time, maybe with the traditional roles reversed.
I will take the “corrupt” over the “murderous” every day, all year. Oh well, don’t think about it too much, preferably not at all, thinking will be out of fashion in the new country; less thought more belief is the future, so go on now and vote for whomever you had made your mind to vote for months ago.

How about "corrupt and murderous" together, just like its been the past five years with your lovely purana Pakistan? So much hate for change? So much fear of at least trying for a new & better Pakistan? What a shame.
@Gp65: Sorry but your argument it purely technical. In reality corruption is very, very seldom proved in a court of law ( in Pakistan it never as been so ) but its visibility is so overwhelming that to deny it on a technicality is dishonest. On the issue of the TTP, Imran Khan / PTI have never condoned their actions, what they have done is suggest solutions in which they peddled a soft line approach along with force where needed , something different from the hard line only that has not produced results. If this is construed as sitting in the extremists lap then again I will call it deliberate misconstruing of facts. On the question of choice, if both options are bad, one should show ' back-bone ' and reject both.
the army is trained to only fight battles and Kiyani statement is correct for his institution but not for the nation. if the war is the answer then i am sorry to say, that answer back fired in Afghanistan and we are still paying for it whereas the american and leaving it. if we indulge in this war any further there will be no Pakistan therefore we have to negotiation not matter what their view are....Imran is looking for a new option to deal with this menace not the tried and and failed option of war we can just have one option like we have had with India and look how far it got us...
This guy has literally carved out a career out of bashing IK and PTI. How about you try covering some more bases now?
It's not a bad idea actually, the claim that 'we've lived with corruption for years, but the Taliban are murderers and will kill us all'.
The fact is that Imran Khan is the only politician bold enough to call out Malik Ishaque and the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi by name.
Also, since you seem to be quite worked up about hypocrisy, it was Bhutto who legalized the persecution of Ahmadis and he was also the first one to provide political space to the Mullah. But I'm sure you knew that already.
When we kill thier children in Fata in operations what's that? We are cruel too with them... IK says come out of American war So that they have no moral back ground for fighting... Those fighting for their ideolgy will stop and then let tribes to get rid of left behind militants themselves.. The policy of general kiyani and previous governments gave us nothing...Taliban became stronger and stronger....So,IK is right to advocate change in policy..
@talha: Wrong comparison. India is not attacking you today, TTP is. Or are you suggesting a surrender to TTP similar to that in 1971? Even at that time India had no intention f ruling over Pakistan but TTP have made it very clear that they want to rule over Pakistan.
@Parvez: He could not have said that he will not be with either the corrupt ( really accused of corruption not proven) and murderous (accused of soft corner for TTP) . He has to choose among available options. If two bad options are available ( as per his logic) then intellectual honesty requires that he picks the one that is less offensive to him - which is what he has done. It would have been intellectually dishonest if he had claimed hat PPP was not corrupt and that is why he supported it,
@libral indopaki,: You have not made any sacrifices in the global war on terror so why would anyone acknowledge it, what you have on your hand is a domestic insurgency by TTP that has nothing to do with the global war on terror. Musharraf took billions of dollars of free arms with the promise to help NATO in the Afghan war but his duplicity was that he took the money and never tackled Haqqanis. At this time the only thing that Pakistan does is allow the NATO supply route to pass through Pakistan for which it is well compensated. If you do something for money, no one considers it a sacrifice
"I will take the “corrupt” over the “murderous” every day, all year.' Well, Mr. Saroop, finally you have confessed that your beloveds were massively corrupt. This was forced out of you by a lot of very good Op-eds in this newspaper telling how the public thinks regarding the current violence going on. We don’t recall you saying this when your beloveds were in control and involved in rapacious pillage and you were championing them very stridently.
A better statement was recently given by another author, which condemned TTP but also condemned the PPP, ANP and MQM for their corruption. We don’t choose murderers but that doesn’t mean we chose corrupt instead.
“thinking will be out of fashion in the new country’, really! Was it in fashion when your beloveds were holding the reins?
Imran Khan has not said TTP are ONLY annoyed because it is America's war. That's just a lie. TTP wants to promote its sick ideology, and it feels more justified and gets more recruits because it knows we are in the laps of the US. Get the US out, bring some semblance of justice, like electing leaders who are not vocational crooks, and the TTP will not vanish but get weaker, and the increasing trust of the masses in the government will make it stronger against the terrorists. This is not a complicated argument, it's just that some people will destroy common sense for their 'educated' ideologies.
there was another general who said essentially the same thing some years ago. we are currently trying him for treason ...
@a&a:
Peoples dont you understand that the simple fact that these Taliban are paid by our enemies…..!!!!
And which Taliban would that be, Sir?
The Good One or the Bad One?
Or both?
http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-2-174220-TTP-joins-Afghan-Taliban-to-wage-spring-offensive
And Who is this enemy?
http://tribune.com.pk/story/173744/wikileaks-saudi-arabia-uae-funded-extremist-networks-in-pakistan/
Enjoy!
Its ironic to see the dichotomous nature of our demography. There is one segment of society that seems to be in a world of its own, right or wrong is another issue. These people being fortunate enough to be educated expect everyone around them to posses the same level of understanding and liberality.One should come out of their utopia and start seeing the ground realities of what the will of the majority is. They speak of the post materiel phenomenon whereby people start looking at social issues after cross the line of basic economic prosperity. But when most of your people haven't achieved this, then how do you expect them to have such a thinking? And how do you expect an premiership aspirant to uphold such liberal values when the target voters aren't of that opinion?
@a&a: But wait, your keyboard ran out of ink after you said that "Taliban are paid by our enemies"!!! Please put in a new ink cartridge and tell us just WHO those enemies are AND provide some credible sources to back up your comment!!!
@a&a:
" ..... Peoples dont you understand that the simple fact that these Taliban are paid by our enemies…..!!!! ....... "
Will you Sir, be kind enough to name the enemy, or their names if more than one?
PTI supporters are just idol worshippers nothing else.
Peoples dont you understand that the simple fact that these Taliban are paid by our enemies.....!!!!
A very nice article. I just got disappointed by reading the comments of PTI,s workers. Every one is just busy in blame game and every one believes that Imran Khan will change the evils overnight. Imran is a human being and please don't make him some divine force or an angel. The problems in Pakistan are not in such form which can be solved by a single political party. War on terror is the issue on which Imran khan has just an illusioned vision and policy. The specific ideology of Taliban in Pakistan does not consider democracy as Islamic and consider all those who support democracy as infidels. remember when PTI will be in power you all will see that this TTP will then attack on PTI officials because Taliban just know the language of bullets and don't believe in negotiations and this is what i know personally about them as i have seen them for four years in Swat.
SI, Right kind of Punjab or Punjabi. You nailed it very accurately. Be safe and god bless you Thanks
Spot on! I have been saying the same thing for decades and have faced the animus of pti's brainwashed supporters who fail to decipher the obvious truth.
By the same logic. Pakistan should never make peace with India, for all those murders of Kashmiris. never make peace with America for all those drone attacks on our land. You so called intellectuals are not happy with anything are you?. what do you want, a full scale armed conflict in KPK which borders on civil war? where has that left us in the past 10 years. how many have died. lets continue that and we will have thousands more dead.
and if that is what you are suggesting, why criticize musharaf. Didn't he battle the extremists; bugti, lal masjid people, but no that was a massacre. As long as only the status-quo is maintained will you be happy. I have noticed one thing in common for all of you. Your love for maintaining the status-quo. Never in last 5 years have you guys ever came out with all guns blazing against what was a sick, corrupt government. Now you all wake up all of a sudden.
An excellent attempt at confusing the narrative. When done by an intellectual mind it becoms all the more believable. No sensible person will condone the crimes being committed by the TTP and for you to assume that Imran Khan does and then to build a case, is not in keeping with intellectual honesty. If you had ended by saying that you will have nothing to do with either the corrupt or the murderous, instead of the way you did end, your bias would not have been so apparent. I disagree with you on this one but I remain a die hard fan of yours.
Purana Pakistan bachae ga tu Naya banay ga ............. Pity The Nation that follows Pied Pipers of all kinds!
@Waqas Ahmed:
Read:
“AL QAEDA hardly exists here,” he said, “and what are called the Taliban are [our] own tribal people. The more we kill them, the more militants we produce.”
Thus spoke PTI leader Imran Khan to BBC’s Islamabad reporter Orla Guerin
http://dawn.com/2013/05/04/right-needs-wise-counsel/
Yaawn same old nonsense.
what a rubbish article. Ik has agian and agian spoken against the attacks, if war was the answer wouldnt we have won it
"Mr Imran Khan believes that the TTP are only Pashtuns and Tribals who are just annoyed because of America’s war, etc and all will be well once the “New Pakistan”. Nowhere has Imran khan said this, you either don't have the proper understanding or you are lying intentionally.
@Ali tanoli:
"since 14th august 1947 we are fighting others wars its not new to us what u saying we killed our own peoples joining Mughals, Queen, now amereecia."
Mr. Tanoli A.K.A 'the genius',
You are absolutely right.
1965 was China's war. 1971 was Mongolia's war. Kargil was UAE's war.
@Najeebullah:
"Is IK blind, why doesn’t he reads what the intellectuals are saying about him."
Narcissistic people do not care about what others say. IK is a grade A narcissist.
IK appears to be a bigger Narcissist than Z A Bhutto who practically destroyed your country single handed.
You know they say "History repeats".
In case of Pakistan, "History repeats frequently". IK will destroy your country completely.
I understand the author's concerns and I am sure PTI supporters as saddened by the tragedies striking Karachi as anyone else. However, it is probably too naive and simplistic to draw a "corruption" vs "murderous" dichotomy between other parties and them. PTI is not getting votes based in its stance on Taliban.
@Mohammed:
"Naya Pakistan will destroy the Utopia that the PPP/PML have built. Shame on you IK for trying to destroy our perfect country."
Well, IK won't destroy your country. Because your country is already destroyed.
But, IK will sink your country.
A factual analysis that hate cannot respond. More power to you sir! I don't think that none of the rightwing leader and their supporters would give up their hate against the secular and liberal parties. Their love and connection with TTP terrorists is so strong and deep that a few more children's death is not going to make any difference. When more than 50 thousand murders cannot convince them that TTP are terrorists what makes you think that a few more murders would? How could they give up their strategic assets who are brining them close to power? I have yet to see a logical point by point response except the hatred from the rightwing supporters.
Bravo... Elegently put.
If Imran shoots down drones, that may be the end of Pakistan's shaky economy. The great anti-imperialist before him, Z A Bhutto was seeking a meeting with Carter when his government was on the verge of collapse. Carter just ignored him and Zia took over. Democracy was first subverted by the politicos before the generals delivered their coups de grace. What would you rather have: a corrupt system or a collapsed economy?
Please go ahead and vote for "Purana Pakistan" because it was oh so perfect..
If IK had understood the problems faced by this country, he would never ever have put his feet in politics. I think Nadeem F Paracha sums Imran khan up quite correctly. So have you dear author. And for that matter, the "right kind of Panjab" too. Be safe.
You are blaming Imran Khan for his hypocrisy but neglect to mention the hypocrisy of Musharraf and the coalition government of PPP,ANP and MQM for agreeing with the Americans for constant drone attacks on Pukhtuns in the Tribal Areas. Now even the International Red Cross is questioning the validity and the legality of drone attacks which has killed more innocent civilians than the intented targeted terrorists. Why can't we understand that when you kill them through proxies and they will kill you., unless you think all those living in FATA are not Pakistani citizens so their killing is not included in Pakistani statistics. Could it be that he understands more than others and specially those who wink wink nod nod to Americans and at the same time make big fuss to the nation about drone attacks.Stop the drone attacks by shooting them down and you will see the terror inflected on Pakistanis will subside but unfortunately the Army is also in cahoots with the Americans, Your assertions are exaggerated in regard to IK. By the way I don't support any party in Pakistan and I can't even vote for any one in Pakistan.
I am very muc h disapointed with Imran Khan statementabout AHAMDIS He should not use religion for polticas Pakistan is paying high price already .
Just Another Imran Khan Hater..
IK had condemned attacks. Please dont doubt that.
What IK says is that the Army going into the tribal regions was wrong. Letting the drones bomb people was wrong. The War on Terror was wrong that resulted in deaths of so many Pakistanis. Lal Masjid was wrong where 100`s of kids.
IK was courageous to say that Qadiyani/Ahmedi
s are not Muslims as they dont believe in the finality. What
s wrong in that? Ahmedis are not muslims anyway. Also, IK was not ruling and so how can you blame IK for the bombings? Who Ruled Pakistan and who ordered troops to go into waziristan? Why blame IK for all this?Being a right wing party, IK has made statements which is a fact.
Been saying for years.. IK is a closet-taliban camouflaged in the guise of a western-educated liberal out to create new Pakistan !!
This is pure power play and politics. IK has realised the the slogans of 'change' and 'naya pakistan' gives him enough traction so he is running with it. A cunning politician.. nothing more..
Thanks for articulating it so well Saroop !
Would you take the corrupt over the murderous? What about the corrupt AND the murderous? Those who siphon funding for health depriving people of treatment for curable diseases? What about those whose criminal negligence leads to food shortages and starvation? What about the corruption that leads to power and gas crises pushing people already living below the poverty line closer to starvation? How about the corrupt who deprive people of basic necessities needed for sustainable life? And lets move on to the corruption of the law and order services, would you choose a corrupt police system that is unable or unwilling to prevent theft and murder in the cities? How about the corruption in the legal system where judges are happy to lock up people on blasphemy charges when they know quite well that the law is being abused?
The problem with 2-dimensional analyses such as these is that they ignore the fact that corruption is considered bad for a reason. It actually has serious ramifications for society and is not just some harmless victimless crime demonised by nutjobs!
fantabulous saroop excellent excellent
BRAVO.
I will take the “corrupt” over the “murderous” every day, all year While the corrupt were in power the law and order situation situation in Karachi got so bad that n the past 5 years I lost 2 relatives to thieves and robbers on different occasions. I just want you to know your beloved corrupt are infact just as murderous if not more because they just filled their pockets and gave themselves guards while we the people suffered.
Naya Pakistan will destroy the Utopia that the PPP/PML have built. Shame on you IK for trying to destroy our perfect country.
In the country of social and intellectual decandence the words of sanity has no appeal, but these words are written now and some will read them then (if they passed the censor). Great write Saroop.
I watched many foriegn channels on television but one strange thing is no one acknowledge our secrifices in so called war on terror and we been treated shiet since hundred of years every one used us we are just a numbers dying in ww2 or 1947 partition death or soviet afghan war or this one what a irony is world dont even considered us a human bieng.
@Arsalan : I would take those who didn't go to his funeral over those who showered his killers with roses and garlands.
As the author says, I will take the “corrupt” over the “murderous” every day, all year.
Murderous is what follows corruption. The last government had five years to control terrorism but they couldn't because of corruption.
Thanks for condoning corruption in manifested terms albeit under the garb of a trumped charge of murder on others. Little surprise that we have not been cured fir the last seven decades because our so called intellectuals are ready to sweep naked thievery, crookry and venality under the carpet on matters of ideology and strategy.
corrupt over murderous well last 5 years have been both corrupt and murderous!!
Wow brilliant sir " less thought more belief " new Pakistan.
Emotional diatribe and hogwash are some of the reactions I got after reading this. How can you equate the martyrdom of our young army men with actually trying to solve the problem. It would have been nice if the scribe could tell which war on terror has been won by violence only. At least Imran Khan has got a plan of going about sorting this mess out, which incidentally he has no role in creating. On the other hand there are politicians who are openly espousing the ilks of these terrorists for political gain in election. I would be more worried about them as they are capable of " selling their mothers" (as quoted by an American senator on arresting Kansi, who was sold out by his relatives)
Bravo sir! With one stroke of your pen, you have absolved your favored outgoing ruling parties of all the murders that took place under their watch and with their participation in karachi and elsewhere(by omission or comission). When its time to fool the nation once again, they've suddenly invented their "victim"-selves once again. Will Mr Saroop mind reminding us what exactly these parties did for any of the minorities in our country? If memory serves me well, none of their prominent leaders even bother to attend the funeral of the dead governer of a certain province who dared to speak in favour of a seemingly innocent woman from a minority.
Is IK blind, why doesn't he reads what the intellectuals are saying about him.
Saroop..stop writing biased qrticles.
What ignorant jargon. guys don't believe this he has been a hater forever stay in your corrupt country and die anyways.
Spot on! Next thing we know we will be worried about the tax Taliban don't pay :) maybe that should be highlighted to make the aggressive passionate youth realize what the main problem is.
Imran Khan has terribly disappointed with his statement against the persecuted Ahmadis. The Naya Pakistan will the old Pakistan as far as minorities, dissenters and liberals are concerned. PTI clearly seems to have a soft corner for Taliban terrorists who are destroying Pakistan. Imran Sahib! You can either be loyal to Jinnah's Pakistan or to a murderous ideology that will end this country.
One can only Cry! I was a very optimistic person. But drifting towards what they call "Mayoosi!"
Bravo Sir Bravo...
since 14th august 1947 we are fighting others wars its not new to us what u saying we killed our own peoples joining Mughals, Queen, now amereecia.
