The Express News had earlier reported that the prisoner had passed away.
Convicted murderer Sanaullah Ranjay suffered multiple head injuries in a prison in India's northern city of Jammu in an apparent tit-for-tat attack after an Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh, was fatally assaulted in Pakistan.
On Friday, Ranjay was airlifted to a government hospital in the city of Chandigarh, 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of New Delhi.
A spokesperson for the government hospital said Ranjay was in the intensive care unit and on a ventilator as his condition "continues to remain critical".
The Pakistani High Commission (embassy) officials "came to the hospital and we have given them Ranjay's medical update", added Manju Wadwalkar, the spokeswoman of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Hospital.
Ranjay, who hails from the city of Sialkot in Pakistan, was attacked by a prisoner who was identified as a former Indian army soldier nearly 24 hours after Singh's death in Lahore.
Singh died on Thursday in Pakistan and was cremated with state honours on Friday in his native village in northwestern India where hundreds of protesters shouted "Down with Pakistan!" as they gathered to pay their tributes.
Singh had been on death row after being convicted by a Pakistani court 16 years earlier for espionage and for his alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Pakistan that killed 14 people in 1990.
His family insisted he was a farmer who became a victim of mistaken identity after inadvertently straying across the border while drunk. India's government also denied he was a spy.
India's foreign ministry said Pakistan High Commission officials had been given daily access to Ranjay.
Pakistan's foreign ministry said earlier in the week in a statement that the "obvious retaliation to the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh is condemnable".
According to the Indian government, 535 Indian prisoners, including 483 fishermen, are in Pakistani jails, while 272 Pakistani prisoners are behind bars in India.
The attack on Ranjay came a day after India ordered tighter security for Pakistanis serving time in Indian jails.
Protests
Two hundred protesters took to the streets in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Saturday to demonstrate against the attack on Ranjay.
An AFP reporter said around 200 people marched in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, against the attack on Ranjay.
The crowds chanted slogans against India and called for "jihad" to force Indian troops out of Kashmir.
They burned the Indian flag and demanded Ranjay should be repatriated to Pakistan. Ranjay is being treated in a hospital in the north Indian city of Chandigarh, where he remains in a critical condition on a ventilator.
Earlier, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, head of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a hardline Islamic organisation blamed for terrorist attacks by India, criticised India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for bestowing state honours on the dead Indian prisoner.
"We are in favour of an action against those who tortured Sarabjit Singh. But there is no justification for Indian propaganda (on this issue)," he told AFP.
Saeed said India should review its own acts and should not promote terrorism in Pakistan.
"Sarabjit Singh admitted in the courts that he is responsible for the bomb blasts and that he was formally supported by India for these blasts. He has taken lives of so many people," he said.
"We don't think that torture in jail is a right thing. Nobody should take the law in hands. But there is no justification for that noise in India at this moment. India should correct its own acts," he said.
The prison violence and resulting protests are likely to cause further friction between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, whose ties were hit by a border flare-up earlier this year that undermined efforts to build trust.
The neighbours have fought three wars over the disputed region of Kashmir, which they control in parts but both claim in full.

@Ahmed Chaudhry: I think India still treats 100s of heart patients every year from Pakistan.
@Ram: Sorry about the typo. I meant to write, "When elephants fight, it's the grass that suffers."
could some one educate me as to which prisoner was beaten to death first with or without the silent nod of prison officials. Was it in Pakistan or India before tit for tat has taken place? Anyway mistreating helpless prisoners by the rest is simply barbaric no mater wher it happens.
@Rangachaya Kulkarni: "I am ashamed." Don't be! "I condemn." Your choice. Doesn't make a bean's worth of difference. "All Indians, please join me in condemention." You wish! All Gandhi hypocrites are occupying seats of power in your country. They don't care and I would not join you for the world as I would be ashamed to! "It is atypical Indian activity." It shouldn't be!
@Fudge..what you want??You want Pakistani to keep killing Indian prisoner and India to keep lodging formal protest in the name of moral values.I would have appreciated if Pakistani would have taken the strong steps when Chamer Singh was killed. This would have ensured that Sarabjit is not killed like this.Any way this attack on Sanaullah would make sure that neither side take other's "moral values" for granted.
@Hadi Pirzada: Please search google and go to Manjit Singh Rattu and u will know the facts. I did not say that Sarabjit Singh is innocent was not spy but Sarabjit Singh was tried as Manjit Singh Rattu whose name figures in the FIR . Rattu was in Pakistan married after converting to Islam with Sjida Sultana has two kids but reached Canada and married Manjit Kaur Randhawa caught by Peel police on account of fraud after competing prison term reached England from where he was deported to India and many fraud cases are registeredin Chandigarh where he was arrested for fraud.
@Moeed Pirzada: Sanaullah was convicted in 2 different cases, with many more pending through an impartial process. Sarabjit's conviction based on zero evidence,by a military court,no better than say, ZA Bhutto etc
"When elephants fight, the grass that suffers" And old Indian proverb
@Riz: Convicted by military court ? No civilized country tries people of other country in military court except rough countries. It is very difficult for Pakistani to understand because most of the people commenting here are either sons or daughters of Pak military personal.
I am ashamed. I condemn. All Indians, please join me in condemention. It is atypical Indian activity.
@Water Bottle: sir he was guilty and waiting for his final decision from the court.sing w/out pak visa and no family member in pakistan then he he is doing in pakistan plus they found the explosive from his place.you call this jock.
@Hadi Pirzada: My dear Pirzada Sarabjit Singh was not a spy he was a labrour from Border village Bhikhiwind and crossed the border when he was under the influence of whisky he was tried as Manjit Singh Rattu who was arrested during the same time but he was released and he reached Canada where he was booked for fraud and then he reached England where he again committed fraud and was deported to India initially he was from Mehatpur in Hoshiarpur and after reaching India was residing in Panchkula and many cases of fraud are registered in Chandigarh and is a proclaimed offender you can search for him in google and u will know the reality.
@ET Please get your facts right before publishing such sensitive news as the same raises tempers on either side and may lead to more untoward happenings. As per 10-05 PM PST bulletin today, Sanaullah was in coma but in critical condition. Pray to God that he survives and recover soon.
@Kamal: two wrongs don't make a right. Shame on us both but more on you for being utter hypocrites. What was wrong 2 days ago becomes tit-for-tat now! I honestly thought better of India but you guys are the same, what's worst? you are defending it with no shame.
This is disgraceful for India and extremely painful for the families of the prisoner back in Pakistan. It is bewildering why Indian authorities did not anticipate this when Sarabjit Singh was attacked and make all effort to move prisoners of Pakistan to a more isolated jail or cell.
As an Indian... i want to pray healthy life for all prisnors live in both the countries.. we should resolve this matter with some passions not with fights.. as we know that all political leaders distroyed us, so be unite and resolve it.. thank you.
@Four: WATCH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBGehdtVxwI
Terrible reporting by ET: bringing dead people back to life!
Where is the evidence against Sarabjit ? Zero. No direct evidence . His trial was not open and he was convicted on testimony of some Pakistanis who said he gave them money to plant bombs and got reduced prison sentence. Thats it. I would give zero credibility of such testimony.
The crowds chanted slogans against India and called for “jihad” to force Indian troops out of Kashmir. Keep trying, this is only killing your poor Kashmiri people. Sad .....:(
Every Pakistani feels really sad that Mr Sanaullah has to face this.
This would have never happened had you treated Chamail and Sarabjeet in accordance to your laws.
While killing of sabajeet was most reprehensible act, the state funeral accorded to his remains only gives credence to the fact that India has a different standard for its nationals when it comes to terrorist blasts by its trained perpetrators,The world like to know about surbjeet s service to his nation warranting such a high profile last moment rites.
He has not died yet. Pakistani Media- Kindly do not hurry up the things. We have good medical facilities, he'll live.
@Virat(Indian): oye Virata, if Sanaullah commited crime against innocents, even against army without a LAALKAAR,then as an Ex Paki, I will never honor such coward person.
Pakistani media is funny.
They turn phenyle to acid.
They turn a critically injured man to a dead man.
@Four: You are right. We are all barbaric.
SAD we seem to have lost our sanity
2 countries killing off each others guilty convicts within their own prisons and the majority of both the country's public declares the deceased prisoners to be heroes and demands 'justice'. Sarabjit and Sanaullah both didn't deserve to die the way they did, yet don't forget that none of the 2 were innocent by any means.
@lol: lol, you cracked a COOLEST JOKE.
@Fudge: Everything you can not expect polite answer from India. Because each time you crossed your limit now its time for PAK to REPAY.
Congrats. 1-1. In this expensive world, life has become cheap and invaluable.
What about so many muslims killed by Hindus in Gujarat and in Samjhota express ? where is justice in this regard ?
Alright folkes!
Jihad's cooking now, and India says that she is ready!
No news in ANY Indian media!!!! They are just saying that he is in critical condition.. before that they were saying that he was in stable condition..
@Fudge: everything bites back if u keep on hitting..simple as that
@Ahmed Chaudhry: So you should celebrate, instead of trying to come out of mud but maybe competing with India is only sole ambition which Pakistan have ..
@lol: Why didn't he was punished when Chamel Singh was killed in same jail ? Had he been punished then all such mess could have been avoided.
well its still not fair we got two mutilated bodies of indian prisoners from pakistan ...and they just got one!!!!!! AFTER ALL WHO STARTED IT FIRST....???? WE WERE SILENT FOR THE FIRST CHAMAIL SINGH AND SARABJIT BROKE THE PATIENCE !!!!!! pakistan never had a democracy ever since it was formed in 1947 and even now also there is threat to their first ever democratic elections .... pakistan has become not only a blot in the name of democracy but also has been the great reason for STARTING THE FUEDS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! poor sanaullah was part of the music band in the indian jail and had a great voice in singing ... after all he didnt deserve that but HAIL TO HIS COUNTRY AND COUNTRYMEN FOR SPREADING THE POISON FIRST !!!!!!!
Tit for Tat... We were Silent on Chamel singh killing in Pakistan Prision but now we will reply equally.
Extremely extremely shameful and disturbing, the humanity has stooped so low,Using poor people as pawns. These are real people with families and friends, beating them to death is totally INHUMAN.Please stop this vicious tit for tat to multiply. Please stop this violence now.
ashamed that it happened in india, after all the moral talk that indian media was imparting after sarabjeet...as an indian, iam disgusted, disturbed and distraught, more so coz it was likely a retaliation for sarabjeet, which indian govt. shd have been aware and reacted...
What happened in Lahore was incompetence of jailer, who should be punished. What happened in Jammu was a deliberate action by democratically elected Indian government. Whathappened in Lahore was condemned by Pak govt and many people. What happened in Jammu is being celebrated.
There is a stark difference between the two. Stup equating us as barbarians with the indians.
I think now our indian friends can acknowledge that last week as we had no place to hide from the act of a few deranged individuals. Now Indian can get down from their high horse and admit they have not progressed and are as provincial, narrow minded and blood thirsty as we are. In addition, all the talk of India becoming a giant in medicine and pharmacology is bunch of baloney as well. They couldn't save Sana and neither could their best doctors save two young people, a woman and child assaulted in Delhi. I guess no matter how Indian pretend to be a super power they are struck in the mud just like us.
I wonder why Pakistani media insists on calling Sarbajit Singh a convict Indian spy. He was a proven terrorist involved in killing of at least 14 pakistanis. He had confessed it in our courts. I feel ashamed on behaviour of pakistani media in this regard. Sarbajit Singh "the terrorist" would had been hanged long ago.
Sarabjit was convicted and he confessed that he plotted bombs in Lahore. He should rather be called a terrorist. But i am ashamed of what happened in both Pak and India.
@Hadi Pirzada:
Conservatives are everywhere, and especially on TV. Majority of the so-called 'tv-anchors' are all conservatives or funded by right wingers. These are the people who make the common Pakistani hate an Indian and vice versa.
TERRORIST sanuallah who was involved in jammu blasts survives : good news for his lovers in pakistan although i was wishing for his sarabjeet like end , after all that was justified as justice by pakistanis .
@Haseeb: Ha ha her silence speaks louder than her words.
RIP, a tragic incident which should have never happened. The deceased was flown immediately to one of the best hospital in North India but unfortunately could not be saved. It is appropriate time to set free more prisoners who have been languishing in jails in both countries for decades which include Indian POW's captured in 1971.
LOL Gandhi's whole life gone in waste...i.e. "An Eye for an Eye Will Make the Whole World Blind".
RIP trust in humanity
Extremely sad and disheartening.
As a Pakistani, i strongly condemn both attacks, since both lost their lives!! Neither it was Sarabjit's fault nor Sanaullah's.. The real game lies somewhere else!!
These incidents will happen as long as we are not willing to obey our rules.Had sarbajeet been hanged much before than we would could have avoided this situation. He was a convicted terrorist & should have reached his end the way he deserved but by delaying his death sentence for an indefinate time(courtesy corrupt pakistani government) and the way he was killed in the kot lakhpt jailed he became a hero for Indians & ou media didn't realise what they were projecting. They said all they could about our agencies together with indian media and here we are now in a situation where our prisoner is been attacked but the now Indian media has gone silent, now they are not talking about the government involvment in the attack bcz its not in thier national interest. This is where Indian media is much better than ours, they project and protect thier national interests whereas our media does nothing but criticise our own institutions. Both of these incidents should never had happened but there is something to learn for everybody especially for Pakistani media
@Fudge: Completely agree with you sir,India no better than Pakistan.
@Fudge:
There is a difference between individual barbarism and a state sponsored extremism.
Like Sarabjit Singh,Sanaullah should be honored in Pakistan. The Pakistan government should give jobs to the family members and also has to give the family members money as compensation make Sanaullah as martyr,he has to be laid to rest under state respect.Let the two souls rest in peace in Heaven.
seems in Pakistan, people were praying for death of Sanaullah, so they too have something to beat their chest. while reality is that killing of Sarabjit in Lahore by FANATICS, and now QAIDIAAN DI SHAAMAT AA GYIE..
@Fudge.."Human rights"..thank GOD you know this word..We have the right of tit for tat..
Lets declare India our Most-Favored-Nation now..
Both these incidents of death of Indian and Pakistani prisoner , from attack by inmates, is very sad and depressing. I hope Indian authorities take action against any prison officials found complicit.
Human rights in India? can the Indians comment on this please, just a few days ago you were commenting about India being the champion of Human Rights?! our citizen has died in your custody, equally deplorable.
both incidents are deplorable. However, i m surprised why the pakistani ghairat brigade is so riled up for as they constantly defend the revenge motto of the pathans.....technically this was nothing more then revenge.
When will this stupidity end??? India and Pakistan have to be the most belligerent, hate filled nations on the planet towards each other. It has gone well beyond the point of ridiculousness!! Live like neighbours and friends!!!
It was sad what happen.
Now what is pak gov is doing for victim... As IND gov has given 100lacks ind rupee. Gov job for both daughter n more than 45000 people joined his janaza.
Tit for Tat, shame on both Government.
Lately, I've been hearing a lot about Pakistanis being barbaric and uncivilised, and as much as I'd like to disagree with that, I can't. However, it's good to know our neighbours are just as barbaric and uncivilised as us, no matter how much they pretend otherwise. Condolences to the families of Sarabjeet and Sanaullah.
its fake news, he is still alive
Think he's still alive, but critical.
Stop this violence! Punish all responsible people. Both countries should provide security to all the prisoners and also officials should not indulge in such barbaric acts. It won't fetch anything, let there be peace.. enough of India-Pak rivalry, lets try out peace for some years now.
Asma Jahangir, please condemn.
Sad. We should not allow such occurances. This is not the way to treat prisoners in either in Indian or Pakistani jails.
@Moeed Pirzada:
"I wonder why Express Tribune keeps on referring to Sarabjeet Singh as a “spy” when he was convinced for acts of terrorism leading to the death of several Pakistani citizens? "
No need to wonder. Because Sarabjit Singh's trial is a JOKE. Anyone with an iota of common sense knows that he is innocent and clearly framed by the incompetent Punjab police.
@Moeed Pirzada:
Sarabjeet was convicted for being a spy, but was he really a spy, or was he another poor soul caught up in the blood thirsty India Vs Pakistan tit-for-tat game of catching people wandering across the border and accusing them of being spies or terrorists. While closet conservatives may be screaming for blood whenever they get a chance, those in the media should also provide a background and provide an impartial analysis, for tomorrow it may be they themselves who may be convicted or rail roaded into prison, as a result of false charges.
@Four..Gandhiji told us if somebody slaps you put forward your 2nd chin...but even he has not said that again put forward your 1st chin if you get slapped on 2nd chin as well..Sarabjit was 2nd Indian who was killed in Pakistan..Hope you understand what I try to say..
One all.
Extremism is a double edged sword, but this terrorist Sannaullah should not have met his end like this, RIP.
An eye for an eye... it never works. I am ashamed as an Indian today.
Dear Editor I wonder why Express Tribune keeps on referring to Sarabjeet Singh as a "spy" when he was convinced for acts of terrorism leading to the death of several Pakistani citizens? these distinctions become important. Editors are advised to read the story in Indian papers describing Pakistani prisoner, Sanna Ullah, as a "convicted terrorist"..What happened in Lahore was a terrible tragedy and sheer incompetence on the part of jail authorities. What happened in Jammu is a tragic reprisal to what happened in Lahore and unless saner heads prevail this may spread. Media has responsibilities of accurate reporting and here Express Tribune is doing some avoidable mistakes...
Very sad but this was very much expected! Feeling grief for both families. They became pawns in the fight of two countries. Where would it end?
Big Slap and shame on Indian and Pakistani govt! It's big failure of Pakistani foreign and defence policies! May his soul rest in peace! May Allah protect all Pakistani prisoners wherever they are in the world and forgive them and release them to have safe return to Pakistan!
What happened to all the Indians claiming moral superiority? It seems Indians are just as barbaric as other humans.
Congrats. Now death of Sanaullah will bring more peace and love between India and Pakistan- Liberals Joint Statement
Tit for tat?
