Axed in sleep: Two murder suspects rearrested after protest over release

The third suspect has reportedly fled to Sindh.

Two murder convicts were rearrested on Wednesday after family of the deceased staged a protest shortly after the Kot Sabzal police released three men.


The third, police said, is missing.

The protesters had gathered on the National Highway near Rahim Yar Khan and blocked it for more than four hours with burning tyres. They accused the police of protecting the killers.

A 25-year-old woman was attacked with an axe in her sleep in Kanab village police area. She had died a few hours later.

A case was registered against Hamid Ali, Noor Hassan and Ahmad Ali at the Kot Sabzal police station on the complaint of the father of the deceased.

They said the three men were arrested, but later let go on Tuesday.

Complainant Qalandar Bakhsh alleged that the police were protecting the murderers, who he said, had support of a former MPA and an election candidate from the area.

Muhammad Hussain Bohar, brother of the deceased, told The Express Tribune that the suspects had been threatening his family with dire consequences since their release.

Muhammad Hussain Bohar, requested the district and regional police officers to take notice of the matter.

A police arrived at the scene on Wednesday to disperse the protesters, but to no avail. They later dispersed when CIA’s Mumtaz Ahmad visited the scene and told the protesters that two of the suspects had been rearrested.

Muharrar Umar Farooq told The Express Tribune that Noor Hassan and Ahmad Ali had been arrested.

He said Hamid Ali had reportedly fled to Sindh. He said he too would be arrested.
