KARACHI:

A Karachi bank branch was robbed of over five crore rupees on Tuesday, the biggest robbery this year so far.

About Rs53.8 million were taken away by armed men from a branch of the United Bank Limited (UBL) in the city’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal neighbourhood on Tuesday evening.

This was the second major bank heist in the city after the 2009 robbery when Rs300 million had been looted by security guards and their accomplices from Allied Bank Limited situated on I.I. Chundrigar road.

Witnesses and law enforcers say the robbery took place after the bank was closed at around 7:15pm, adding that a security guard of the National Police Foundation was the architect behind the robbery plan.
