PESHAWAR:

The vice chancellor of Islamia College University on Sunday appealed to militants to release Ajmal Khan, the institute’s abducted principal, on humanitarian grounds.

Addressing a news conference at the university’s Khyber Union Hall, Vice Chancellor Dr Ihasan Ali demanded the government make efforts for the safe release of Ajmal Khan and also appealed to militants to release the principal on humanitarian grounds.

Ali added all preparations for the 100th anniversary of the college, which was founded in October 1913, had been made. The celebrations would formally begin today (Monday).

Islamia College had historical status as various important personalities had completed their education from the institute, said Ali. He added various educational, cultural, historical and extracurricular activities would be held throughout the year to celebrate the college’s anniversary.

Ajmal Khan, the abducted principal, is a cousin of Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan. He was kidnapped from outside his residence in Professors’ Colony on Sept 7, 2010.

Two years later, Khan’s driver, Mohibullah, who had also been kidnapped along with the professor, mysteriously returned to his official residence located inside the university campus.
