LAHORE:
Transparency International has said that the independent power projects (IPPs) Karachi Electric Supply Company and fertiliser manufacturing companies have inflicted a loss of more than Rs1 trillion to the national exchequer in 10 years.
In two letters to the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry the consultant of the Transparency International Syed Adil Gilani has asked him to take suo moto notice of the issue.
Gilani said that he has received complaints that the alleged corruption of the finance ministry has given benefit of Rs198 billion to Abraj Capital and the IPPs are receiving money from the government by showing fake expenses. The consultant of TIP said more than 50 IPPs and fertiliser manufacturers were involved in this misappropriation.
The IPPs were purchasing furnace oil with additional markup of 3 to 5% as guarantee cover, Gilani said.

These IPPs need to stop their operations with immediate affect.
Oh well, at least Raja Pervaiz can still run in elections, thanks to the same courts.
We have left everything on CJ of SC. Instead of requesting suo moto TI should file a petition with proves so that the culprits be brought to justice.
If TI feels there has been corruption on such a wide scale, it should file a public interest litigation. This constant reliance on USO moto notice is unhealthy and transforms the judiciary into an executive function thereby distracting it from its original responsibility of dispensing justice to ordinary Pakistanis who have come to courts for justice.
Arif Naqvi of Abraj Capital is a business front man of Zardari, so the allegation of Transparency International, provided sufficient evidence is provided, may not be baseless.
