HEC win national championship opener

KARACHI: Higher Education Commission (HEC) began their campaign at the National Women Baseball Championship with a 17-2 win against Sindh at the Punjab Stadium yesterday.

HEC crushed Sindh as Ayesha Qazi scored two home runs whereas Mariam Shafiq scored one run and a home run for the winning team.

Meanwhile Aliya Riaz, Rabia Basri, Zainab, Mehwish, Madiha and Siama scored two runs each. Urooj and Tooba scored a run each for Sindh.

“We are going to win the gold medal, I’m very confident about that,” HEC captain Zaiba Manzoor Awan told The Express Tribune. “This is the first time HEC is taking part in the championship but I’m confident that our team is the strongest.”

The event is featuring four teams including HEC, Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), who will compete for the trophy in the week-long tournament.

Each of the four teams will play in the league format and the top two sides will qualify for the final on April 27.

The next match of the event will be played between K-P and Punjab today.
