Two police constables were arrested here on Sunday for misbehaving with a Wapda assistant linesman and his wife.

Gujranwala Electric Power Company Sub-division No 1 (Wazirabad) Assistant Lineman Muhammad Ijaz and his wife were looking for a house on rent.

They were visiting Muhammad Shafique’s house at Ali Nager when Sub-inspector Muhammad Arshad and Constables Riasat Pehlwan and Tariq Malik raided the house and accused Ijaz of bringing a prostitute to the place.

Ijaz and Shafique tried to explain that the woman in question was Ijaz’s wife but the policemen misbehaved with them.

They also beat Ijaz. The policemen then demanded a Rs10,000 bribe from Ijaz and threatened to register a case again him if he did not pay.

The next day, Ijaz told his colleagues about it. To express solidarity with Ijaz, they stopped work and staged a demonstration against police. The also threatened to suspend the power supply of the town.

Superintendent of Police Attique Tahir took notice of the complaint and ordered an inquiry into the incident. Following the inquiry, Constables Riasat and Tariq were suspended from service and arrested.

Cops of our country being held accountable in our country is such a rare story. I should frame it and put it on my wall.
