Kumar Sangakkara gave an inspiring performance with the bat as Punjab contained Mumbai to 154 for nine before completing the target in the last over to notch up their third victory in 11 games in the IPL.
Sangakkara made a quick 56 off 42 balls before being dismissed close to the finish line. But Kings XI were never in trouble after the openers had given a fine start.
Irfan Pathan, who starred with the ball earlier, came to finish the job with 15 off 6 deliveries to inflict just the third loss on Mumbai in 10 matches. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar chose to bat and Mumbai were off to a flyer. The 50 came in the sixth over but the innings went downhill after the hard-hitting Ambati Rayadu was dismissed for 33.
Chawla got three important breakthroughs as he dismissed Rayadu, the in-form Tendulkar and Saurabh Tiwari to derail the Mumbai innings. It was a strong performance by Punjab who had bee languishing at the bottom of the standings.
Deccan beat Chennai Deccan Chargers crushed Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the IPL, successfully chasing down the below par 139-run target in the last over. Chennai collapsed from 82 for two in the 12th over to finish with just 138 for eight in 20 in the face of disciplined bowling by Deccan. Suresh Raina, who finished with 52, was the lone batsman offering any resistance to the Chargers’ bowlers.
Ryan Harris was the star, finishing with three for 18. In reply, Deccan were off to a steady start. T Suman continued with his good form as he contributed 55 to the run-chase and sealed a fourth victory in 10 matches.
